Chapter 16 Delight
Yomo walked in front of me the whole time. Occasionally he'd glance back to see if I was still following him or if I was going to attack him.
"I think Tsukiyama already told you about their mission other day."
"Yeah, they were fighting and then the Doves came barging in."
"There's more to it. I don't suppose that you've talked to Kaneki today?"
"No, Tsukiyama left this morning to go see him."
"Kaneki must be upset about what happened."
"Yomo, what happened?" Right when I asked him, we were both standing in front of an old apartment building.
Yomo allowed me to walk in first and then told me to go up to the third floor. He went over to the first door and lightly tapped on it.
The door swung open. Since Yomo walked in without any hesitation, I felt somewhat more safe. The room was a complete wreck but there was no one but Yomo and me.
When the door shut behind me I heard a voice.
"Long time no see, Megumi."
I quickly spun around, staring at her with wide eyes.
"Rize...you're alive." I breathed. "But how....?"
Rize walked up to me and wrapped her arms around my neck. She hugged me tightly and ruffled my hair.
"Ease up, Yomo. Megumi and I were friends back in the 11th ward. She doesn't belong to you, hell you barely know her." I could hear a mocking tone in her merry voice.
"You can be unpredictable. I can't take my chances when it comes to you." he replied.
"And if I eat her-? Would really attack me?" She laughed
"I know you wouldn't."
"Oh and why not? I have the perfect opportunity right here. With one move I can snap her neck and devour her."
I felt a bit scared knowing she was crazy but I had a glimpse of hope that she was only doing this to antagonize him.
"Because you asked for her specifically when I asked you if you had anyone with a close relation to you." he continued the argument.
Rize loosened her grip on me and leaned her head against mine.
"You're right..." she sighed. " She's the only one that's somewhat like family to me."
Rize stepped back, still having her hands on my shoulders, and took at look at me.
"My, my, I never thought that you'd grow up to be this beautiful." she smiled.
Now that I was able to take a good look of her face, I just noticed how exhausted and weak she looked.
"It's really great to see you again too." I smiled back.
Both of us sat in at the table while Yomo stayed in the living room, watching TV. Rize went over to the kitchen and handed me a cup of coffee.
"Rize...How is this possible..." I took in a deep breath to calm myself down. "I thought you died..."
"It's a very strange story, I hope you have a lot of spare time because it's pretty long."
She told about what happened after the accident. Dr. Kanou did take some of her organs and placed them in Kaneki and he's been using her for other experiments like the twin guards that were with Miss A.
After all those years, Rize was living in a nightmare, being poked by needles and having piece of you ripped out. It actually made me frightened to know that humans were becoming even more twisted.
I shivered at the thought of being captured one day and be used as a lab rat. As she kept on talking she kept making herself a new batch of coffee to sustain her hunger.
"What will you do now?" I asked.
"Hmmm, I'm not really sure yet...But I do know that I'm getting the hell out of here!" She laughed. Her chuckles quickly faded, she turned in her chair and called out to Yomo. "Hey, when are you fetching my next meal?!"
"Most likely tonight. I just gave you some two days ago." He replied blandly.
"Well, they didn't really have a good buffet there now did they?" She growled at him. Once she turned back to me, she transformed back into her merry self.
"So, I want to hear what's happened to you recently. This change is very intriguing to me." She rested her chin on her knuckles and waited for me to start.
"Well, there's just so much that I don't know where to start." I chuckled.
"Hm, the last thing I remember was that you used to wear these disguises because of that guard you had."
"Oh yeah, about that...Tsukiyama actually broke me out of that habit."
"Tsukiyama?!" She burst into tears and laughter after hearing his name slip through my lips. "That seems out of character for him to be that generous."
"He actually made me into his assistant and let me stay at his place."
"Oh?! Is that so? It's strange to see how much people change. Two years and already the world is crumbling." she held in her laughs. "So both of you guys are his guards or servants now."
"Oh...um..Noboru is gone now. He left me and joined in with Aogiri. For the past two years I've been trying to bring him back but I've had no luck." I sighed.
"Men...they're either perfect puppets or faithful companions. Don't tell me your trying to bring down the Aogiri."
"No, my only goal is him. I'm not sure why he's turned evil but there is some good in him still. I can tell because he did save me from the Aogiri and he spared my life when we met. I will bring him back."
"Dearest Gumi, this all sounds very sweet but is it worth the trouble?"
"To me it is, I don't want to move on with my life knowing that he's suffering for my well-being. I have done nothing to show my appreciation and gratitude towards him. He's always helped me, now it's time for me to help him."
"To be honest Gumi, I don't know if you're noble or foolish. But if it something really important to you then I'll support you. But be careful when you're around them, it'll only drag in more trouble."
"Thank you, Rize." I smiled. "How long will you be staying here?"
"Ideally tomorrow. I have to leave here and disappear as soon as possible."
"Will I ever see you again?"
"I can't make you any promises about that."
Yomo got up from his seat and walked over to us. He tapped on my shoulder and leaned over to whisper.
"We must go now."
Rize walked us over to the door. I hugged her tightly and said my goodbyes.
"Did I ever mention that you were my role model when I first met you?"
She laid her hand on my cheek and kissed my forehead.
"You're probably the closest friend I've ever had in a long time. Thank you, Gumi."
When I finally let go of her, I felt my legs grow heavy and had a sudden mood switch. I was immediately sad once I walked out of the building.
I looked back at the building but Yomo kept urging me to keep on going. Yomo walked me all the way back to Tsukiyama's flat.
"Thank you Yomo..." I sighed.
"Cheer up, Gumi. I'm sure that you two will cross paths again someday. Have a good night."
Once he was gone, I dragged myself to my room and fell into my bed. The sheets were so soft and smelt like vanilla and cherries. The scent was so calming and sweet that it immediately put me to sleep.
