I'm woken up with a tug from my boyfriend. “What the hell?” I question. “Pepper made dinner.” The clock says it's six in the evening, but it feels like midnight. “Okay, I'll be down in a bit.”
He leaves and I get up. Quickly, I brush my hair, the rest of me is fine. So I walk downstairs.
Peter and Pepper both sit at the table, food in front of them. I notice the seat with its own plate of food. I sit there and realize what we're eating.
“Chicken tikka masala?” The orange curry smells delicious, I've only ever had it at Indian restaurants. Never homemade. “Tony said it was your favorite.” I nod, confirming this fact.
“Tony talked about you two a lot. He adored you both. Not a day went by where he didn't regret not being able to bring you back.” I roll my eyes. 'So you've told us.'
Pepper takes a bite of the food and I take that as permission to eat. “God, this is amazing.” She laughs, “Thank you. Howie enjoys it too.” Peter also compliments the food and thanks the chef.
“So, how did Dad get us back anyway?” I decide to start up a conversation. “Well, Scott Lang came over and proposed an idea.”
“Who?”
“You'll meet him at the memorial.”
“Oh, okay.”She explains what happened leading up to the battle. “Damn, I never thought it was possible.” It's unbelievable, not just how he managed time travel, but how he used it and saved billions.
“Now, let's talk about you two.” She changes the subject. “What about us!” Peter is quick to respond.
“How did you two meet, how'd you start dating, everything I would have learned as it happened.
“Peter and I met on our first day of freshmen year. He had no idea who I was though.” Before Peter even had powers, before his uncle died.
“I asked her out after the Vulture incident. At that point, I knew about her dad, and she knew about my abilities.” Pepper smiles at us, “Thank you for being there for her Pete. It means the world to me.”
I want to tell her she has no right to thank him since she is the cause of my recent troubles. Yet, I hold my tongue. Dad would have wanted me to work it out with her.
“Well, it was nothing. Comes with the job.” It seems a little awkward.
The rest of the dinner is spent answering Pepper's questions about my life.
After everyone's plates are empty, she stands up and takes them all. “I can help with dishes,” Peter blurts out.
“No need, how about you two go upstairs and unpack.” Not exactly what I want to be doing right now, but it's whatever.
Peter follows me to the spare room. The minute the door shuts, I dramatically exhale. “You're always so tense around her.” Peter places his arms around my waist from behind.
“I think that'll change soon. Just give me some time.” His breath tickles my neck, a shiver runs down my spine.
I can't help but think where we would be if not for the blip. Would we be living together? Would we even be together at all? No need to think about what-ifs.
“I'm going to lunch with Pepper tomorrow.” He hums a response against my shoulder.
“I'm scared.” His arms squeeze my torso, assuring me, that everything will work out.
“Will you be going back to school next week?” Peter asks. “No, I think I'll just wait until the new year starts.”
We pull away and start unpacking. It not too much, just some essentials. I have more than he does though since I'll be staying much longer.
“Everything will be okay! Because I'm amazing.” I state confidently, fake it till you make it.
“Wow, very humble.” I blow him a raspberry and continue what I was doing.
