JACK'S CHILDHOOD.

1762.

Jack grinned ear to ear as he walked to class. Today was his first day of third grade! As he walked into class, fellow classmate on the ground caught his eye. Tears welled up in the kid's eyes as his hands hesitated above the smashed tube of nutrient paste on the floor. Specks of gray and green were splattered all about.

The sight of this poor kid, and the hunger they would have to experience, caused a cold pit to well in Jack's heart. He couldn't stand by and ignore this. Jack walked over to the child and took out his own food.

"Here! You can have mine!" Jack said.

The kid looked at him confused, as Jack eagerly took out his nutrient paste pack and held it out to the other kid. Slowly, the kid took it with shaking arms; as Jack grinned ear to ear.

Jack went to his seat as the teacher came in. She scanned the room with cold stern eyes before sitting down. Then her expression widened, and she stood right back up. She picked up a black eraser covered in chalk powder.

"Who placed this here?!" She shouted as she patted white dust off the back of her black skirt.

The whole room went silent.

"If no one takes responsibility, then everyone will be punished!"

Jack looked around. Everyone looked hesitant. They all looked afraid.

"ONE!"

If no one took responsibility, they were all going to get punished.

"TWO!"

There was only a few students missing. Maybe they pranked the teacher before skipping class.

"I DID IT!" Jack shouted as he shot up.

The teacher grabbed a metal rod. It was about as long as the teachers arm and was a quarter inch thick.

"To the desk." She said.

Jack did so. The teacher forcefully bent him over. The first wack on his butt sent a flare of pain jolt all across his body. The second wack felt like fire and spread across his body like the cracks in broken glass. He was already in tears from the first two, but the third wack is what caused him to start sobbing. She threw him back on his feet.

"Stand in the corner." She said, "Then stay after class."

Jack walked over the corner as he started to rub his butt. Then he felt a hot pain on his hands and he yelped.

"The pain is a remainder." She said, "Endure it."

Jack's hands trembled as he walked over to the corner.

When the day ended, Jack stood in front of the blackboard. From top to bottom, left to right, the entire board was covered with the same sentence; written over and over again.

I WILL NOT PRANK OTHERS AND THE SUN IS NOT REAL.

As Jack finished the last sentence, he looked at the board

As Jack finished the last sentence, he looked at the board. The sun was real. His mom said so. It had to be real... And one day he was gonna go see it. Jack would see the sun. If anything, his desire to see it only grew with everyone around him denying its existence.

Then he looked at the clock. It was much later than he thought it was. His mom was going to be upset. Yet, Jack remembered to look on everyone's faces when he turned himself in. Despite the spanking, standing in the corner all day, and writing the same sentence all afternoon... The look of relief he saw on everyone's faces. That made it all worth it. He was glad to have helped them.

Placing the chalk on the counter, Jack walked away with a smile. He had saved his classmates from suffering and sorrow. The memory of his actions warmed his heart like the sun. It was then he decided, that he would always help others, even if it hurt him.
