Hours Later—

[Jacob's Point Of View / POV]

I was pacing outside of the room Axl was in. I was genuinely scared even though I wouldn't admit it. Being in this damn hallway for five hours and the doctors not telling you anything really makes you anxious.

My breathing hitched as the door opened, revealing Dr. Charles Lindsey and a few other doctors I didn't know the name of, walking out into the hallway.

"Is she doing any better? Is she awake?" I questioned the four doctors in front of me as they stared at me. "Did the surgeries go well?"

They looked at each other and Dr. Charles Lindsey shrugged his shoulders. "Jacob... sir, both her back surgery and bullet removal surgery was successful, but there's no response to painful stimuli, except for reflex movements. I hate to say this, but... she's..." Charles paused, fumbling over his words.

"She's?!" I grumbled impatiently, already fed up with his bullshit; I wanted him to just say it already.

"Axl is in a coma... She's not making any progress. The poor girl hasn't woken up yet, but it's not looking good. There's a huge chance she won't wake up because of the extent and trauma of her injuries. Her limbs aren't responding and her breathing is irregular. If she wakes up, which is highly unlikely, most people who recover from a coma wake up with disabilities and many develop complications. In a few weeks when she's in a vegetative state, we'll have to pull the plug if she isn't awake already. The reason why she's in a coma in the first place is because humans can't compensate for much longer on its own in a blood volume loss over forty percent. At the stage she's in, her heart can't properly maintain pumping, circulation, or blood pressure. Ms. Johnson's organs might start to fail without adequate fluid and blood. But there is still hope, sir." One of the other doctor's spoke up as he stared down at his shoes.

I inspected his name tag; it read,
'BYERS, PERRY
Surgeon'

"So you're the one that did her two surgeries, right? Byers?" I asked the head surgeon as I looked back up at him.

"Yes, sir. The best surgeon Faith has. We did everything we could. We just have to wait, sir." Perry stated as he continued to stare at his shoes.

He was definitely scared of me. All of them were.

I stepped closer to the head surgeon. "I want to... thank all four of you for... trying to save her. Especially you, Byers and Lindsey." I nodded my head in respect. "Axl better not die. If she does, I'm killing all four of you, mercilessly. Your deaths will be full of torture and I won't have any goddamn sympathy. I'll call you if she wakes up or if there's an emergency. Now leave." I ordered sternly as the doctors trembled in fear.

Without a second thought, they all left.

After a few minutes of standing there alone, I took a deep breath, preparing myself, and turned the doorknob to the room Axl was in. Walking in that room, I shut the door quietly, hearing a slow, irregular beeping noise. I realized that the vital signs monitor showed that her heart rate was 39, her blood pressure was 76/45, her oxygen saturation was 66%, her respiration rate was 10, but her temperature was the only thing fine at 98.2.

I walked closer to her and sat down in the metal chair closest to her bed and scooted it up. Axl looked like she was sleeping peacefully. There were numerous tubes connected to her, keeping her alive. Examining her, I started tearing up.

Damnit. I promised myself I wouldn't cry; she's not dead, yet, Jacob.

Axl's skin was very pallid, more pale than normal. She looked deathly pale... There were dark purple bags under her eyes. Her nose was crooked and her lip was busted. Bruises and scratches littered her whole body... Seeing her so hurt made me feel extremely guilty. This was all my fault. I didn't get to her in time. I could've prevented this from happening.

I shook my head in disgust and disappointment at myself, rubbing my face in my hands, wishing I was the one half dead in this hospital bed. She didn't deserve this.

A few minutes went by and there was a knock at the door.

"Come in." I ordered as I raised up and crossed my arms, hoping my eyes weren't red and teary.

The door made a squeal as it slowly opened. John, Faith, and Joseph was in the doorway.

I ushered them in here with my hand.

"I brought some flowers." Faith gave me a small smile as she closed the door behind her. "Not the bliss flowers unless you want me to get some."

I shook my head no. "Appreciate it, Faith." I said as I took the bouquet of flowers from her and placed it on the table beside the bed.

They all three sat in the other metal chairs on the other side of Axl.

"No update?" John asked me as he laid back in his chair, crossing his legs.

"She's- she's not doing too good, John." I confessed as I stared at my lifeless girl. "Axl's in a... coma. The doctors say that she doesn't have a high chance of surviving." My voice struggled to not break.

"Oh, brother... I'm sorry, Jacob. We cannot give up just yet. Remember to wait patiently on God's plan. Prayer helps, dear brother." Joseph gave me a soft smile as he stood up, walking over to me; he placed his hand on my shoulder as I shook it off.

"I'm fine, Joseph. And I don't want pity." I grumbled as I didn't take my eyes off of my poor babygirl.

I reached for her hand, taking it into mine. Her hand was warm still, which was a good sign.

"I'll still be praying for you and Axl, Jacob. John and Faith will as well. You need to get some rest. You've had it rough recently." My younger brother implied as he walked toward the door. "Let's go, Faith and John."

"Bye Jacob!" Faith beamed at me as she headed toward Joseph.

John strutted over to the door, glancing at me. "Stay strong, big brother."

Before I could say anything back, they shut the door and were gone. At that point, I just wanted to cry, but I knew I couldn't. I had to stay strong for Axl. I had to stay strong.
