The Following Day—

Carmina, Sam, and I broke in the mine the Highwaymen were at to save Rush. After killing all the enemies, I quickly climbed up the ladder, Carmina and Cap following behind me. Once I made it to the top, I seen Thomas hit a Highwayman's skull with a crowbar multiple times; I don't know how he was still breathing.

"Argh...! Oh my God... Jesus, I thought you two were dead. I should've known you'd come through." Rush chuckled as he crouched down and began choking the half-dead Highwayman until he was dead. "You guys came back for me. You crazy sons of bitches, you came back for me!" He walked over to me as I cut the zip-tie that bound his wrists together.

"Of course we'd fucking come back for you." I replied.

"We need to go... Now!" Rush exclaimed, getting on his motorcycle with a turret. "Let's get going. Man the turret and I'll get us out of here."

"Alright..." I turned toward Carmina and Sam. "You two need to get out of here; take the ATV and go. Head to Prosperity and don't look back, got it? We'll be fine."

Carmina nodded, going back down the ladder as Sam walked closer to me. He placed his hand on my hip and kissed my forehead.

"Be safe, okay?"

"Yeah. You too." I smiled softly at him and quickly got in the motorcycle's turret.

When the door opened to the outside, Highwaymen were everywhere. I began shooting them down and they fell to the ground one by one. Thomas floored it and we were out of there.

After a few minutes, Thomas yelled, "Shit, they're coming right at us!"

Two Highwaymen four-wheelers were flying towards us; immediately I gunned them down easily.

Ten minutes went by of me gunning down every Highwayman in sight, then, all of a sudden, Rush parked the motorcycle.

"My leg is too fucked up to drive. You know where we're going. You'll have to drive us the rest of the way." Thomas got off the bike as I jumped down from the turret.

"Sure thing. We make a good team."

"Yeah... Didn't think I'd get out of there alive. Thanks for risking your neck for me, Deputy."

I smiled at him as I got on the bike; I was driving now while he was in the turret.

"You're not going to believe what I saw. One night, the mine was attacked by people who looked like they were out of the Stone Age. They were fighting against shotguns using only bows and arrows. They took shots and kept on coming. Listen, I don't believe in wizards or magic, but I know what I saw. Those people had something, something that I can't explain. If we could find out what their secret is, maybe we'd have a fighting chance against the Twins."

"That's crazy."

"Yep... I'm fucking exhausted, I gotta catch my breath."

About ten minutes went by and we finally made it to Prosperity. I helped Rush out of the turret and yelled, "Open the damn gates!" The gates instantly opened as his arm was slung around my neck.

Carmina seen us come in and shouted, "Mom!" And rushed over to us. "Oh, slow down, slow down... Jesus, Rush. They really did a number on you."

"It's nothing. Day or two and I'll be fine." He replied, limping toward the old Seed ranch.

Kim walked out of the house, "Did I hear right? You Thomas Rush?"

"You must be Mrs. Rye. Carmina's told me a lot about you. Your daughter's as tough as they come." Thomas chuckled.

"Preachin' to the choir. Carmina, get the alcohol."

"Got it."

"Let's have a look at that wound. Careful."

I let go of Rush as he walked over to take a seat on the bench outside the house, Kim helping him over to it.

"You're gonna have to jig this socket." Thomas told Kim as he grunted in pain.

"You all that's left?" Kim asked Rush as she got ready to jig his socket.

"Yeah."

"I'm sorry. I can't imagine how you feel."

"Responsible."

Carmina came back with some alcohol, handing the bottle over to Kim.

"The Twins have a way of making you feel hopeless. You can see why we need your help." Kim explained to Thomas as he took a swig of the liquor.

"Don't know how much use I'll be to you anymore." He stated, handing the bottle back to Kim.

"We can still do this, Rush. Build this place up and make it strong, just like we talked about. Carmina chimed into the conversation while I just stood there, taking everything in.

"It's not that easy." Thomas told Carmina. "We had specialists. Experts."

"But you must've started small. This is no different." Kim tried to persuade Rush as she handed me the alcohol. "You've done it before. Show us how."

Rush sighed, "We're gonna need more people, and they gotta be willing to learn. Learn fast."

"We will... Okay, now, that socket... You ready?"

"Yeah. Go!" Rush growled as I handed the alcohol back to him; he took a huge swig of the liquor.

"3... 2..." I counted down as I popped his leg back in place.

He screamed in pain and hurriedly stood up, still screaming. "Alright then. Let's get started."

"Woah, woah... Wow.. stop. How about we rest first?" Carmina suggested, making her way over to Rush, placing her hand on his shoulder.

"Mm. Good idea." He stated as he limped inside the ranch.

Sam came up to me, "I'm glad you two made it out."

"Yeah... I had to pop his leg back in place. He's been hurt pretty bad. He needs to rest up." I said, looking down at my feet. "I'm gonna go take a nap. I've had a rough few days."

"Oh, of course. Go ahead. Don't let me stop ya. If you need anything, just let me know." Sam smiled at me.

I grinned back at him and made my way up the stairs to my bedroom. Shutting the door, it feels like I can finally breathe. I'm not the army girl I once was. I'm not the Deputy from before. I'm not as strong as I was mentally... I'm just broken... I'm now just the broken Axl... Probably a widowed Axl. Tears escaped my eyes before I could even realize it and I just let them flow down my cheeks like a damn river, not wanting to wipe them away... Not wanting to pretend to be strong anymore...

My hands grabbed my guitar for comfort and tuned it just right. I started singing and strumming the six-string.

"Only you can make all this world seem right. Only you can make the darkness bright..."

My voice cracked; I couldn't go on. I haven't sung this song in ages. My eyes stung as I cried even more. Then, laying down on my bed and closing my eyes, I gently rubbed my ring that Jacob gave me seventeen years ago in a meek attempt of giving me some kind of peace. The heart in my chest kept beating, pumping my whole body with blood, but that wasn't what was keeping me alive, it was the possibility that Jacob could still be out there.

He's gotta be out there.

Poor Axl🥺
