A very long thirty minutes passed as I continued to journey North to seek proof of Joseph's death for Ethan and Jacob. I didn't want to do this, but I knew that I had to. No matter what, I've always tried to do the right thing and this is one of those things that I felt I needed to do and I was going to do it. No one else could do this but me. And that mindset kept me going. Those thirty minutes seemed like years as I continued making my way North. Deep down, my heart hoped Joseph was still alive for Jacob, John, and Faith, despite what Ethan wants. I'll tell you what Ethan is, he's a weak coward that is hungry for power; and that is what will end up killing him... Along with his greed.
The wind began to get chilly as I pulled my jacket closer together and the sky started to become darker. My pink lantern was the only light source I had and it was small, but it was better than nothing though. The river became more and more narrow as I continued on, almost hitting rocks in the process. Before I could stop myself, my voice took off as I sung the first song that came to mind; the lyrics flew out of my mouth.
"Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender
Pretending that I'm doing well
My need is such I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell
Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender
Adrift in a world of my own
I've played the game but to my real shame
You've left me to grieve all alone
Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
Yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughin' and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not, you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around
Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
Yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughin' and gay like the clown
I seem to be what I'm not, you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around"'The Great Pretender' by the Platters was stuck on my mind for some reason and that song, well any song by the Platters, reminded me of Jacob.
Anyway, a couple minutes went by as the river became wider, allowing me to have more room. Large, treelike sticks were sticking up out of the blue water.
—An Hour Later—
After nearly dying from too much Bliss intake and coughing my damn lungs out, and igniting fire beacons, I made it to Joseph's small abode. Entering it, my jaw dropped.
Joseph was alive. The fucking Father wasn't dead like Ethan said...
I walked up slowly behind the Father, trying to not scare him.
"I did everything that I was asked. I sacrificed. Myself, my family. I let us into the new world. I a thought that it would be glorious." Joseph paused for a moment, "I was wrong. I have waited so long for someone to come. I'd begin to despair." He stood up, turning around to face me. "I was right... Gift, you're alive." The Father grinned as he walked over to me, placing his hands on my cheeks. "God showed me your face in a dream so long ago. It was before you came to arrest me that night. I knew you would be the one to come and make things right. Set them exactly the way they're supposed to be. I knew that you would bring Salvation. You've come seeking help. I can't give you any, only God can. But He has a plan for you." He pointed up in the sky at an aesthetic pink tree that was nestled beside the ravishing waterfall. "Come. Walk with me, my Gift." Joseph ushered me to follow him outside.
"I've missed you Joseph. We all have. Especially Jacob, even though he doesn't show it, I just know." I told him as I walked behind him.
"Jacob's alive? John and Faith?"
"Yes." I smiled as I continued to follow him.
"God really is good. Anyway, I have something else to say. After God's cleansing fire, I saw the journey He laid before us... and I knew what was required when we set foot on our New Eden. When humanity emerged, I gathered my flock and set them on a new path: a rejection of everything connected to the old world— the creation of a new society, living off the land, taking only what was needed." Joseph explained as we walked side by side, trekking up the hill. "When the harshest years of the dark winter fell, I despaired. And in that despair, I found our salvation... this tree. Its fruit a gift from God which gave my family the strength to endure through the famine and pestilence." He added as we neared the waterfall beside a large pink tree which resembled a Cherry Blossom tree. "New Eden thrived. We created a paradise on Earth. But it did not last... This plague of locusts saw to that. These... Highwaymen embody everything God has instructed us to forsaken. Their souls are rotten. Diseased... But you... you are different, Gift."
"How am I different, Joseph?" I was baffled. "I'm doing my best to demolish these Highwaymen. I've killed... I don't know how many I've killed. Countless..." I confessed as I looked toward the blue skies.
"God believes your soul is worthy. I believe your soul is worthy. God showed me that you're our Gift." The Father replied as we came upon the magnificent tree; he urged me to follow him to the tree with his hand. "This is the help you've been seeking." He commented as he touched the bark of the tree. "God's gift to us. That which sustained my family through the darkest time. You and this tree." Joseph added as he took one of the apples that hung from the tree and handed it to me. "Let me offer you this— our miracle. The first time that I partook of this gift, I was confronted by a ravenous beast. It was my soul." He explained, looking into my eyes. "And in that moment... I knew that in order to be worthy of God's gift, I had to slay that beast. I had to cleanse my soul. Because if I did not I knew that beast would consume me. This is God's test." Joseph stated as the apple in his hand got closer to my face. "Cleanse your soul."
I took the it from him, gazing at the bright red apple; it looked delicious. Why not? Biting down on the apple, Joseph responded.
"Go. Kill the beast." He voiced as my arm began burning.
All I could see was red as I stepped back and tripped over a rock, causing me to collide with the ground. My eyes couldn't stay open and my head was beginning to become heavy. Suddenly, darkness consumed me.
