ONE WEEK LATER
Natasha sighed as she walked into the precinct. It had been a week since Jake had caught Jay in her apartment and rushed out. And a week since he'd spoken more than two sentences to her.
He had refused to let her explain why Jay had been at her apartment, instead opting to pretend that nothing had happened. He thought that if he ignored everything then it would eventually go away and he'd stop feeling like there was a hole where his heart should be.
Jake now only spoke to her about work and when he did there was an air of cold professionalism to him. Natasha had never seen him act so professional before, not even with the people who could fire him without a second thought. It made her stomach turn that she was the one person he did that with.
Rosa had offered to scare him into listening to her but Natasha declined. She could have easily done that on her own but she decided to just leave it be.
Natasha decided that everything that happened in the two days she and Jake had tried dating meant that they never should have. She chalked it up to the universe telling them it was a bad idea.
She just wanted everything to go back to the way it was before they'd kissed. At least back then she didn't feel like slamming her head into a door every time she saw Jake.
She still remembered the day after he'd seen Jay at her apartment. She'd seriously pondered shooting herself to get out of the awkwardness and tension that surrounded the precinct that day.
"Jake!" Natasha perked up when she walked into the precinct and saw Jake walking into the elevator.
His eyes widened when he noticed her and gulped dryly as he prayed for the elevator doors to close faster. His prayers were not answered as she slid in just before the doors closed.
"Jake," She breathed out as she stood in front of him.
He kept his gaze forward as he straightened his shoulders but his eyes never met hers.
With a deep sigh, she turned on her heel and his shoulders sagged in relief until he felt the elevator jolted to a stop.
She crossed her arms and turned to him with a brow raised. "Where you going to run now?"
"What the hell Ta- Natasha?!" He yelped as he braced himself against the wall.
She pursed her lips at the use of her first name and bristled before she took a step closer to him. "Will you please listen to me now?"
"No," His voice was quiet as he screwed his eyes shut, "I don't even want to think about what happened last night. So I definitely don't want to talk about it."
