CHAPTER FORTY-NINE
CHOICE

ARTEMIS LEANED HER elbows on the old rusty railing as she stared at the horizon, the wind blowing her black locks lightly.

She didn't know how to feel after what she did.  She did not cry with sadness, nor did she scream with rage.  Everything was empty, meaningless right now.

"You know you can't keep doing this right?" Nick called behind her, buttoning the last button of his shirt.

"Doing what ?"

"This, shagging with people just to forget about reality for a few moments. " he said, tucking neatly the shirt into his pants. "Artemis we both know that you're doing this to avoid the truth, but if you keep evading the truth you're gonna lose everything important to you while you're off in your own world. I know that I can't understand what you're going through but you can always open up about it even if I'll only be able to comfort you in two or three of those things. All you need to do is accept the truth of things and be brave."

(A/N: Thanks Peace xD)

That made her extremely angry, she whirled around, gritting her white teeth. "Avoiding the truth? No offence Nick, but you don't know me at all. You don't know what I've been through, you don't know what it's like for people to point fingers at you and judge you for something you're not. You don't know how awful it is for people to think of you as a monster, a psychopath, a murderer just because you're related to someone like that.  You don't know what it's like not to have a mother who loves you, so don't talk me about the truth, because my life is so full of truth that I want everything to be a lie."

"Of course, I'm sorry." Nick bend his head down shamefully. "But still there are people who care about you. Hermione is one of them. And eventually, she'll leave you if you don't stop playing." Nick turned around and slowly walked away. "Have a good night."

Artemis didn't say anything. She turned to the railing and once again leaned in, inhaling the cold air. But just then someone's footsteps were heard, Artemis guessed that Nick had returned and did not turn.

"Can you tell me why?" A familiar voice called behind her, causing Artemis to whirl around fast. In front of her stood Hermione, carrying a blank expression.

"I needed a distraction," Artemis shrugged nonetheless, trying to look as calm as she can.

Hermione let out a scoff and crossed her arms, "Distraction? From what if I may ask?"

"The pain."

The bushy-haired girl shook her head and bit her lip, "You could've come to me, we could talk about it-"

"It's not so easy! You don't know what I've been through! You won't understand it! You won't understand what it is to be judged!" Artemis shouted, clutching her fists, as her still bruised knuckles longed to pound something again.
