CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE
CRUCIO

THE SOUND OF the doors opening and the incessant footsteps of the disciples coming out of the halls showed that the class was over.  Hermione and Artemis were in the middle of packing when Riley's voice, or rather Professor Rosewood's, called.  "Artemis, would you stay for a minute please?"

The girl turned questioningly to her new teacher, who smiled, putting her black blazer over her broad shoulders. Arty set her bag on the table and walked over to the teacher, who was patiently waiting for the students to leave the office.  When everyone was out, she turned to Artemis, who was still standing, looking at her confused.

In a swift motion, Riley stretched out her big arms and engulfed Artemis into a hug. Arty was taken aback by the woman's actions and hesitantly hugged her back. Once they pulled away, Riley grabbed Artemis by her shoulders, examining her carefully. "You've grown up."

Not knowing what to say, the girl muttered shyly. "Thanks."

Riley noticed the reddened girl. "Did I scare you by accident?"  she asked jokingly, wiggling her thick dark eyebrows.

Artemis snorted and snorted, shaking her head until her reddened cheeks reddened even more. "N-no, not at all! J-just I don't know you and ... "

"What do you mean you don't know me? I'm Tom's sister, Tom talks so much about you, I didn't expect you to become so close," exclaimed Riley, still confused why the girl felt embarrassed around her.

"Of course, of course, b-but b-but you are-"

"Hot? Sexy? Incredible? Gorgeous?"

Artemis nodded vigorously. "Yes!"

Riley burst out laughing at the girl's quick response. Artemis on the other hand, buried her face in her hands, feeling the warmth of her red cheeks increase. "Calm down, Artemis, for a moment I thought you are asking your cousin on a date."

Artemis bend her head down in shame. "I've done worse things with my cousins." She muttered just loud enough for the Professor to hear a string of unclear words.

"What?" Riley asked, with a raised eyebrow.

"Oh, n-nothing nothing!" Artemis brushed off quickly.

Just then, Riley's wide smile disappeared. She instinctively clenched her forearm, the dark mark slowly appearing. "Shit." the woman muttered angrily as she continued to squeeze her hand with clenched teeth in pain.

Artemis looked at her hand, curious to see the sign. She wondered what the pain was, if she could bear it. Until recently, Riley looked so happy, now Artemis could not figure out what was written on her face - fear, pain, anger?

The professor quickly covered the ugly sign with her white sleeve and looked at Artemis, who was staring at her blankly. The woman took a deep breath and reached for her bag with a trembling hand. "I have to go, we'll talk some other time, and you go back to your dorm."
