dance with me, rain on me

You were finishing up in hair and makeup. Tom had come with you to set today, and he brought Harry along. They thought it'd be a good opportunity to catch memories. You, on the other hand, disagreed. The clothes they had put you in told you a lot about the video. You'd already been to dance rehearsal and costume rehearsal, but there were no cameras or people or set designs officially there.

You loved Rain On Me. You loved Gaga, you loved working with her and relating to her; she was such a bright spirit, and the two of you truly bounced back off of one another. It helped in your songwriting too, because Rain On Me was about getting out of that toxic headspace and letting yourself be free. It was about standing up for yourself.

You pondered if the makings of the music video would be harder than the production of the song itself.

You were right.

Making your way onto set, you saw Tom. He smiled the minute his eyes landed on you; he'd never seen you in such a costume before. He loved it already.

"Hey baby," he gave you a quick peck. "You look amazing. Gaga's waiting for you."

You smiled, remaining silent as you made your way in front of the camera. It had never been this way before. You never got this worked up over filming something, especially your own song. Music is your life, your safe haven and your protective zone. Very rarely does it ever suffocate you.

"We ready?" Robert, the director, asked.

Gaga nodded enthusiastically, and you gave him a watered down version of hers.

"Take 1 in three.. Two.. one.. Action!"

Music filled your ears as you danced from your memory, with your feet and without emotion. You knew it was noticeable. You wanted to throw up.

"Cut," he glanced at the lighting guy, giving a few directions before redirecting his attention to you. "L/N," he hummed. "Can you give me more?"

You nodded, and Take two began. You did this four more times before they stopped the music. "L/N," he stepped away from the camera man, into your view. "I need... more," he gestured with his hands. "This video is about energy and fighting off the bad and I'm not getting that from you. You're like a dead puppy in every shot. I need more energy, more life. Try being more enthusiastic."

You nodded, again without words, fighting back tears of frustration and anxiety.

"Let's take it from the top."

Again you went, changing nothing, and Robert eventually cut the take short again. "L/N," he sounded like he was getting frustrated. "We need this done today if you want the video out. Do we need another dress rehearsal?"

"I'm sorry," you spoke quietly. You had the attention of a few crew members, Tom and Harry glancing at you worriedly from behind the camera. "I just don't feel very confident doing this. Is there any way we could change something?"

"This is the whole concept of the video," producer Mike stepped forward. "It'd take weeks before we could film, and that's without the covid. We do this now or we have no video at all."

"Excuse me," Tom made his way past a few people, nudging by before he was standing in front of you, next to the director. Robert and Mike let you two talk while they took a break.

"Hey, baby," he loosely held both of your hands. "What's up?" he stroked your hair, moving it away from your face "What's going through that beautiful brain of yours?"

"I just..." you sniffled, attempting to keep yourself together. "This is really out of my comfort zone. Everything looks so different I just don't know how to- how to-"

"Hey hey," he pulled you into his chest, "it's alright, love."

After a few quiet minutes, he broke the silence. "What if I... did it with you?"

"What?" you carefully wiped your cheeks. "You can't be in the video."

"No... but nobody said I can't do it from behind the camera."

You looked up at him lovingly, smiling genuinely for the first time that day. "Yeah." You spoke softly. "Yeah, I like that."

"Good," he gave you one final kiss on your head before telling the director to start another take.

On the first take, you burst out laughing because of how ridiculous you thought Tom looked, trying to do the choreography while smiling and singing to you. Take after take you went, each time giving your all. It almost became competition, who could be more energetically sexy while lip syncing. In the end, the director had gotten more than enough takes, a few with you laughing in the middle of them.

Leaving the set, you ran over to Tom, hugging him as he barely caught you in his arms, hugging you back with a chuckle.

"Thank you," you whispered.

Gaga came over to the two of you after speaking to one of the producers. "You did good today, Y/N!" she smiled, hugging you. "You helped a lot, Tom," she smiled, leaving the two of you as Tom blushed.
