Jay and Ivy made their way back to his SUV since the squad car wasn't hers, it was Christians. "You're gonna need a ride back, I'll take you" jay said while getting into the drivers side. She didn't argue, instead she slipped into the passenger seat and turned to face jay, "what do I do now? I'm assuming Christian isn't my partner anymore..." she said confused. Jay laughed as he started the car, "trudy'll sort it out, don't stress" he said while placing one hand on her leg and keeping his other hand on the steering wheel. She smiled at him and grabbed his hand, he smirked back as they drove in a comfortable silence.
When they pulled up outside the district the passenger side of the car was next to the side walk, Ivy got out and shut the door. As she turned around to start walking into the building, a man around her age jogged past the car and bumped into her knocking her to the floor. Jay saw the incident go down and ran around to help her up, "Ivy you good?" He said while picking her up off of the ground. She squinted her eyes to the man, "yeah yeah I'm good." She used jays arm to get up and she checked out the man as he brushed himself off. "Are you okay sir?" She said while grabbing his arm. Jay was just watching the interaction in silence, "sorry I wasn't looking where I was goi..." the man started but stopped talking when he saw Ivy.
As soon as the man lifted his head up and took his hood down to reveal his face, Ivy stood still and the pair just looked at each other in shock. "Uh..." Ivy was lost for words. The man stared back at her with wide eyes, "I gotta go..." the man said excusing himself quickly and ran off. Jay was really confused at what just happened, "am I going crazy or was that a bit awkward?" He said as he took Ivy inside. "Yeah a bit..." she said while looking back one last time. Jay noticed something was off, "you know what that was about?" he said while they stood by the front desk waiting for trudy. Ivy frowned and shook her head unconvincingly, "I'm sure it was nothing..." she brushed it off.
Jay let it slide but he knew she was lying, "hey guys? How can I help?" Trudy said saving Ivy from jays questions. "Hey, she's gonna need a new partner..." jay said with an annoyed glare. Trudy looked at Ivy wondering what his problem was, "bozo fell asleep, I had to tackle the offender myself..." she explained. Trudy rolled her eyes, "typical, I'll sort it out don't worry. You're new partner should be arriving in a few minutes" she said before disappearing again.
Jay looked at Ivy with worry as they stood waiting for her new partner to walk through the door, he knew she was lying because whenever she lied she fiddled with her hair. "Are you sure it was nothing?" He said getting himself anxious. Ivy looked at him with a smile, "I'm sure jay, he probably just wanted to get home or something. No need to worry..." she reassured him as she grabbed his hand. He smiled but he didn't believe a word she said. They were interrupted by a male officer walking up to them, "kate?" He said while looking at Ivy. She looked at jay then back at the man who she assumed was her new partner, "that's me..." she said in confusion.
"Miller" he said offering out his hand. She smiled and shook his hand then looked over to jay. "I'll see you later okay?" She said as she walked off into the break room. Jay nodded and smiled back, but as soon as she left he lost his smile and began to worry again. He made his way back up into the bullpen and Hailey noticed that he was distracted.
"Jay? Everything okay?" She said while looking over her desk monitor. He snapped out of his daze looked at her, "oh yeah, yeah all good" he lied. She raised her eyebrow knowing her partner was lying, "no it's not, what's going on?" She said in a whisper. Jay sighed realising he'd been caught out, "she's hiding something, I know it" he said while looking at a picture of him and Ivy on his desk. Hailey sighed and smiled at him, "she'll tell you when she's ready, she just doesn't wanna worry you" hailey spoke the truth. Jay nodded in agreement and they got on with their work.
As the clock ticked on, the district was quiet, it got to around 7pm and Hank dismissed everyone but jay since they hadn't got a case. "Jay, you got a minute?" he said as he waved him into his office. Jay gestured for hailey to leave without him so she left the two detectives to talk in private, "yeah" He said already knowing what he was about to say. "There's a spot open in intelligence, olinskys gone and we need to fill the space..." he started but was cut off by jay. "No, you find someone else" he said while pacing the room. Hank laughed at his protectiveness, "You seen her out there jay, she's perfect for the unit" he spat out facts. Jay groaned and sat down on the couch knowing he was right, "I know, I know. But I mean, she's not safe up here, I don't want her getting hurt..." he excused but Hank raised his hand.
"I know you wanna keep her safe, I do too but she's gotta make decisions for herself. I wouldn't put her in a situation that she couldn't handle, trust me" Hank said reassuringly. Jay weighed up the options and sighed, "ugh fine, but under one condition..." jay said with his finger out. Hank nodded for him to continue, "she's my partner" jay said not wanting a debate. "No, not a chance in hell" Hank snapped back seriously. Jay threw his hands in the air, "what?! Why not?" He said in a sharp tone. Hank looked at him then looked at a picture of Erin on his desk, "you know what happens when partners date, plus you and hailey are working. So like I said no, not even an option" he said putting and end to the debate. Jay looked disappointed but soon realised he was talking about his and Erins past relationship, he sighed and rubbed his face with his hands. "Yeah okay, fine" he sighed and caved in.
Hank smiled, he never lost a debate and he always got what he wanted. "Good, I'll see you tomorrow. Fetch her straight up, I'll ask her then" he said to jay as jay got up to leave. Jay nodded and sighed as he walked away. There was no guarantee that he could keep her safe in this job, he loved her and he didn't plan on losing her anytime soon.
