Ruling of Court

If there were rules to our beings,
manuals and scripts to follow,
would we do as expected,
or turn against our nature?

There are laws we follow,
theories we believe in,
yet there are the few that ignore them.

Naturally, we are not perfect,
we are flawed against our own structure,
and our mind has evolved to go against our own necessity.

We hold a court of our own,
each day it decides what law to ignore,
and which sin to commit.

Going against our nature,
our very rules to follow,
is what truly keeps us alive.

That sweet adrenaline rush that clouds our mind from better judgment,
the rush that drives us away from thinking rationally,
that detachment from reality.

We know that it's wrong,
we know the consequences that follow if we are not careful,
yet we let ourselves fall into that pit of no return,
because feeling anything is better than nothing.

Driving away from home and into the unknown,
drifting away into ecstasy with a stranger,
dreaming away from everything true until there's nothing else but false hope.

The court is our own personal devil,
as we let it decide depending on our pain,
and the greater the pain,
the worse the sin.
