ZEKE
"You-you got a tattoo, " Tris mutters. He closes his eyes and nods. "Yeah." It goes silent. "If you don't tell her what happened I will, " I threaten. Four sighs and leans back. "Go right ahead." Damn it."Fine, I will." He keeps pressing on the tattoo. "Someone found the guy who took you. We couldn't get answers out of Four and he threatened to kill the guy if he didn't say anything, and the guy almost passed out when Four covered his mouth and nose."
"Zeke, stop, " Four demands. "Then you tell her, " I retort immediately. "Zeke-" "Four." He stops and I continue.
"He said that Marcus had you, so he ran out. Uriah and I followed him while Mom and the girls watched the security footage. We found you in the basement and long story short we would've died without Four.
Four got us outside and he told Marcus and Andrew that they could kill him if they let him take you out to us. They agreed and he took you out here. We took you to the hospital, but went back for him." I see tears in her eyes. Four keeps his closed and his head angled up.
"They beat on him really bad and he had to have a bunch of surgeries and shit on his leg because his knee was totally shattered. It's why he just fell, because his knee is still fucked up, " I finish.
"I failed, " Uriah croaks. "I couldn't keep them upstairs and they only got down there because of me." I shake my head. "Uri, this was not your fault. This was nobody's fault, but Marcus." He shakes his head.
"Four coulda died and it would've been my fault."
"I deserved it, " Four mumbles. "You shut the fuck up. You have no idea how hard it was to leave you there, " I snap. "You're like my brother. I had to leave you behind. I betrayed you."
"You betrayed me?" Four shouts. "I betrayed you! I almost got her killed!" Tris' eyes squeeze closed and tears drip from their corners. She starts to shake slightly. "It's okay, Tris, " I say, sitting on the edge of the bed and grabbing her hand.
"See? All I do is screw up, " Four says. I shake my head. "You saved our lives. You saved her life." His head shakes back and forth.
"God damn it, Four, " I scolded. "You took two shots for Uriah, kept me from getting shot once, kept Uriah from getting shot two times, you stopped both of us from getting beat several times by taking it yourself."
"I'm sorry, " Tris cries. "I'm not worth it." Four shakes his head rapidly, releasing his wrist and grabbing her gently. "Tris, stop it. You don't have any reason to be sorry." He leans down and speaks into her hair. "You're here, okay. You did it. I don't care about anything else, okay." She shakes her head and he holds her tighter. I release her hand.
"I'm just one person, " she mutters. "Yeah, but you are the best person I know, " Four replies. "You're brave, and you're strong, and you're smart, and you're beautiful. Tris, you're perfect. You're just one perfect person."
"I'm-m not beautiful, " Tris stutters. "I'm not smart, and I'm not brave." Four holds the side of her face to his chest and wraps his other arm around her. "You are so beautiful, Tris. You don't even understand, " he whispers. "If you weren't smart and brave, you wouldn't be here right now." She shakes her head.
"But you-you, " Tris chokes on her words and starts to wheeze. "Breathe, Tris, " Four says. "Just breathe." Her heart monitor beeps faster. "Everyone's okay. You're okay. Just calm down." Four holds her arm and presses down where his tattoo would be with his thumb.
"Deep breaths, Tris. Relax." He starts breathing deeply, probably to help her calm down. "Breathe, " he says through an exhale. "You're alright." After a minute, Tris' monitor is back to normal.
