"Tris, look at Four, " he says, approaching her. I lean against the wall and look up, willing for the tears to stop. "Four, come here." I shake my head, even though he can't see me. "Four, please." I squeeze my eyes closed as I step out.
After a moment, I open my eyes and see Tris' beautiful eyes, but they're glossed over and bloodshot. A tear drips out of her right eye.
"Tris, look at him. He's scared for you because he doesn't want anything to happen to you. He doesn't want you to hurt and it's killing him because he thinks he hurt you." I blink fast. "He loves you more than anything."
I swallow and Tris rolls over into the pillow again. "Tris, what's wrong?" Zeke asks, sitting down with a hand on her shoulder. "I'm gonna head out, " I say. "No, you won't, " Zeke says sternly.
"He-he was there and he-Four-he didn't-"
"Tris, he knows that you have to do this or it'll just hurt you more. He wants what's best for you. He's mad at himself because he knew you didn't want him touching you, but he knew that's what needed to happen." Tris shakes her head. "It didn't, " she cries.
"Tris, look at Four. Please, " Zeke begs. "Just look at him." Her eyes peek out at me and I wipe mine and sniffle. "I'm sorry, " I mutter, stepping closer. "Can I please give you a hug?" I ask, my lip curling upward. "Or at least just hold your hand? I didn't mean to hurt you, Tris. I didn't." Her hand slowly reaches out of the blanket.
I grab it and sit down beside her. I kiss her hand and she covers her face completely.
"What's gonna make it easier?" I ask, leaning down closer to her face. She shakes her head. "I don't want to. I wanna go home, " she whimpers. I squeeze her hand quickly before loosening my grip again.
"I know, " I whisper, looking down at my feet. "Do you want me to get you anything?" She shakes her head. "I want you to take me home." I wish I could, sweetheart. I really do. I just can't do that. I can't just take Tris out of the hospital like this and yell, "See ya, suckers!" I can't.
"What if I did the thing?" I ask, immediately regretting it. "The thing?" Zeke asks. I nod. "Tris knows exactly what I mean." I open my eyes to see Tris shaking her head. "Really? That's the best I can do, man. I'm not a real powerful person." Her eyes peek out and I see a bit of a smile in them.
"Can I see that smile please?" I ask, pouting. "Just a little one?" I see the corners of her mouth turning upward. "Little more, " I add, tickling under her chin. She cringes and I retract my hand. The blanket pulls under her neck.
"I love that smile, " I say, smiling softly. "And I love this hand, " I say, holding her hand up. "And those eyes." I point at her eyes. "And this hair." I ruffle her hair slightly. "I love this brain and this nose." I poke her nose and she smiles more.
"I love this tiny ass heart too." She shoves her face in the pillow again, but I see her pink cheeks. "I see you blushing, " I tease, pulling the blanket away. "I see that blush and I love those too."
"Shut up, " she grumbles. One eye peeks out at me, but I see the playfulness dancing through her irises. "When have I ever shut up?" I ask. She shakes her head.
"I'm sorry, " I whisper, sliding off the chair to squat on the floor. "I wasn't trying to hurt you." She shakes her head. "I just wanted someone to help me, " she murmurs. I close my eyes. "I'm sorry, " I repeat, opening my eyes again.
"I want everything to be normal again." I nod. "Me too. I really wish none of this ever happened to you. I'm sorry, Tris. I really am." She's quiet and a tear slips down her cheek. I wipe it away.
"But guess what?" I ask. "Maybe if it were any different we'd still wish it differently." I laugh and smile a little. "Can I ask you something?" I barely whisper. Tris doesn't answer.
"Do you regret letting them take you?" I whisper even quieter. Tris shakes her head. "No, " she murmurs. "I didn't want you to get hurt. I couldn't live with myself."
