Tris
"Today you will learn how to shoot a gun, " Uriah says and signals for me to grab a gun. I nod tightly, pulling the one from the leggings of my waistband. I grab it with on hand, aim to my side, and shoot without two hands or the proper stance. Dead center. The initiates look stunned."Now for the proper way, " I say and adjust my stance to face the target. Inhale. Aim. Exhale. Fire. Bullseye.
"Your turn." I motion at the table of guns.
They line up against the targets on the roof. Most don't even hit the target.
"If this is how practice is going, imagine capture the flag, " Uriah tells me as I keep my eyes on the targets.
"Don't remind me, " I reply. We are totally screwed.
I prefer to keep my eyes on the target so I don't correct the stance if it works for them. It's not supposed to be done that way, but I like it.
"You should've hit the target at least once by now, " Eric snarls at Four. I groan. Can't he just let shit go?
"Coming from the one who barely skimmed the target, " Four says, not removing his eyes from the target. He fires. It lands a few inches away from the center. He turns to see if Uriah and I were watching and I give him a thumbs up. He smiles a little.
"What was that?" He asks, raising his eyebrows at Eric.
"Don't get cocky, stiff." Eric walks back to his target and raises the gun again. That is how dauntless act. Four seems more confident now. He should. Some dauntless members can't shoot as well as he did.
We walk to lunch and I sneak Four a high five behind my back. His big hand slaps mine and my hand retreats back to my side. I grab a piece of pizza before sitting down next to Uriah and Lynn. I can see Eric giving Four the stank eye. Four smirks as he covers his salad in ranch.
"Why do you seem so cocky?" Zeke asks in a teasing manner. "He's a good shot, " I say and take a bite of the crust. "Plus he shut Eric up, " Uriah adds with a mouthful. Zeke laughs. "Glad Eric didn't beat your ass last night, " Shauna says and I immediately look over to him. He shakes his head as if to tell me its nothing. I ignore it.
"How's your initiation going?" Four asks Zeke and Shauna. There is his stiff showing.
"Eh, " Zeke answers with a shrug. Shauna does the same.
"You'll find out ranks after fights and a few from each will be cut, " I add and Four tenses a little.
"I'm screwed," he says and shakes his head.
"Not if you can fight and throw knives as well as you shoot, " Uriah mentions and I nod in agreement.
"But being a few inches off in a fight, shooting, or throwing a knife could get yourself or someone else hurt. Or worse, killed, " he replies.
"That was morbid, " Lynn chimes in and we laugh a little. I can tell that Four's laugh is nervous and forced.
"Come on transfers!" Uriah yells and we head back to the roof. When we get there, Amar is waiting.
"Grab a gun and continue practicing," I tell them and they obey.
Uriah and I walk over to Amar.
"How's it going?" He asks and we shrug. Not too great.
"I think we should postpone capture the flag until tomorrow night," I suggest.
"That bad?" We shrug.
"Four is pretty good," Uriah says and I nod. "But he appears to have been with Eric, " I add. We all look over the two that appear to be having a shoot off. Four hits the center and starts beaming.
