Chapter 13: Meet the new students of Night Raven College!

"Ha! Boom Baby*!" [NOTE: Reference to a movie do you know which one? You can check your answer at the end of the story.]

Grim proclaims loudly with a proud grin on his face, as we leap through the mirror portal to find ourselves back in the Mirror Chamber. We were just in time: the sunlight peeking through the surrounding windows signals that it is daybreak.

Principal Crowley is standing in front of the mirror portal, looking at us in disbelief: "Eh!? You really went to Dwarfs' mine to find a magic crystal?"

"Huh!?" we exclaim at Principal Crowley's astonishment.

"I really didn't think... You'd not only go, but then come back with a crystal in hand. I'd already completed the paperwork for your expulsion," mumbles Principal Crowley nervously.

Grim glares at him: "Nnga! The nerve of this guy! While we were off fighting some crazy beast, he's already written us off as losers!"

Principal Crowley ignores the last comment, but he perks up at something that Grim has revealed: "What beast are you talking about?"

All of them start to erupt with their descriptions of the monster.

"Yeah! There was a beast in there, swinging its pickaxe at us!" "It was so gross, dripping with black ink everywhere!" "It even had a glass jar for a face and it was crazily strong." "We had to run for our lives. It was awful!"

Principal Crowley gave an expression of interest. "Children, please, one at a time! How about we go to my office and you could tell me what happened?"

"I see... a mysterious creature living in the coal mine. You're saying that the four of you worked together to defeat it and brought back a magic crystal?" enquires Principal Crowley, as he leans back on the soft purple cushion of his wooden chair. The magical crystal is placed in the middle of the well-polished rosewood table between two candle holders. Its rainbow sparkle is illuminated by the candlelight dancing upon it.

Ace, Deuce, Grim and I are seated in front of Principal Crowley.

Ace ruffles his hair, as he tries to explain, "We didn't really work together..."

Deuce steps in to add, "It was more like our goals were aligned..."

Suddenly, Principal Crowley seems to have stopped listening. He lays his hand on his face and starts crying, "Ooh... Oooooooh... OOOHHH!! OOOHHH!!! Sob sob!!!"

Grim flinches at Principal Crowley's sudden outburst: "What's with this guy? Why is an adult bursting into tears!?"

Feeling all eyes on him, the headmaster gets a hold of his emotions and settles down enough to explain, "In all these years that I've been headmaster...I thought I'd never see the day that students from Night Raven College would work hand in hand to face a common enemy and defeat it TOGETHER!"

"What!? I did not hold this guy's hand!" protests Deuce, as he glares at Ace who hurls the glare back at him: "I would never do that, gross!"

Principal Crowley's crying turns into sniffles: "I am just overwhelmed with emotion... just overwhelmed with emotion."

He straightens up immediately, plants the two palms of his hands on the table, and pushes himself up with a flourish, while announcing: "This incident confirms it." Principal Crowley turns towards me and proclaims, "Lilith, without a doubt, you have talent as a beast tamer!"
