Chapter 8: Grim on the run!

----------------------

Later that afternoon, Grim and I are in the middle of wiping the floor-to-ceiling windows in the cafeteria. It is a large, cavernous hall. The exquisite tiled flooring is spotless, bringing out the emerald green diamond-shaped marble tiles outlined in purple. The long wooden tables are set neatly in multiple rows and accompanied by long benches. In the middle of each table is a beautiful earthen fruit bowl.

The room is illuminated by a large chandelier hanging down from the ceiling at the centre of the cafeteria, resembling a massive web of roots of an ancient tree, with the ends culminating in round globes of light. Along the length of the hall, several candelabra that can hold six candles offer additional lighting, supplementing the natural light coming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows that are decorated by the iron frames with the same leaf-like carvings.

On the opposite side of the windows is a large fireplace, protected by a metal fireplace grille. Above it on the brick walls and purple walls were adorned with the framed portraits of the Great Seven. At the end of the cafeteria is a pair of stone steps leading up to a marble balustrade.

"I'm already beat from fighting all day... now we have a hundred windows to clean..." Grim whines. "Well, we did set a statue of fire. I think we got off lightly. Just get a move on. The faster we do this, the earlier we can be done," I remind him while I start wiping another window clean.

"That Ace guy is sure taking his own sweet time. Who does he think he is? Not showing up and leaving us to do all the work! What a slacker! I'm pissed!"

I look over at Grim. Dang, Grim's got a point! I throw down the rag and sit down next to Grim. We wait.

and wait...

and wait...

An hour must have gone by. Grim leapt up: "He is not showing up... Where in the world is he?!" yells Grim. "Wait, he wouldn't just skip out, right!?" he asks me. "Darn it! I think he did... We've been had. Let's go get him!" I cry out. All excited, Grim leaps onto my shoulder. "We're not gonna let him get away with putting all the punishment on us! Let's go, henchman! We're gonna catch Ace and make him wash his share of the windows!" he declares, as we embark on our search for Ace.

----------------------

We head over to a block that looks like it houses classrooms. The first room that we get to says "1-A" on its sign on the door. This must be Ace's class... since he is a first-year student. Grim bursts through the door: "Oraaa! Where's Ace!? You can't hide from us!"

"Um... Grim, there's no one here..." I deadpan.

"...Ah, there's nobody here!?" Grim blurts out in annoyance.

"No. I'm here."

Both Grim and I whirl around to see a wall painting of a man who seems to have come to life talking to us.

"Ffgyaaaaaaaa!!! The picture is talking to us!" exclaims Grim before hiding behind me. The man in the painting rolls his eyes, as the painting floats in front of us.

"What now? It's not uncommon for paintings to talk at this school. That lady over there, the gentleman over there, everyone can speak. Portraits can speak because the people in there have a mouth. This is normal, isn't it?"

"Normally, in my world, paintings don't speak," I try to explain to the painting in front of me.

"Your 'normal' and my 'normal' differ in regards to our worlds. Okay, I get it now. So who are you looking for?"
