Chapter 17: Painting the roses red!

----------------------

When we arrive at the Mirror chamber, we step across the mirror portal that takes us to Heartslabyul dorms. After the flash of white vanishes, a huge red castle appears before us. As we stride on the cobblestone path, I am in awe at the large rose bushes trimmed into the shapes of hearts flanking the path. A banner featuring the dorm's crest—the heart divided in half into black and red with a crown on top—with four small yellow tassels flaps in the wind. It is fastened onto a bar of a lamppost. At the front of the heart-shaped entrance of the dorm building is a pink heart-shaped water fountain. The patches of the rose garden beyond both sides of the rose bushes contain a labyrinthine maze with fir trees.

"Howoah! This is gorgeous! It couldn't be more different from ours!" exclaims Grim.

"But Grim, ours is still a work in progress!" I protest lightly.

As we pass by the rose maze, I notice a guy who is surrounded by buckets of red paint. He has orange hair with the top part tied back into a ponytail, while the rest of the strands hang straight. His eyes are green. Under his left eye, there is a small red diamond-shaped patch.

"Crap, crap. I've gotta get these roses painted," he mutters, as he continues to paint the white roses with red paint.

"Oh, somebody is here," indicates Grim. The boys and I stop walking, watching the guy dodge a big drop of red that splashes onto the grass.

The guy blurts out: "Oh, I gotta watch out. Any paint splatters on me and my head is gone."

"I feel like I've seen this scene before..." I mutter.

The guy suddenly notices us and turns towards us: "Hm? Do you guys need something?"

"What are you doing with that?" asks Ace, while pointing at the paintbrush that the guy is holding.

"This? As you can see, I'm painting the roses red," he answers, as though this were something that every gardener would do as a matter of course. We look at him in shock.

Deuce asks, "Eh? Why would you do that?"

The guy places a finger on his chin playfully. "Hmm, your fresh reaction is so cute!" he teases before giving us his full attention.

"Now that I have taken a good look at you, I just realise that you're the freshmen who busted the 10,000,000 madol chandelier yesterday."

Ace slumps his shoulders and reveals a frustrated expression: "We're gonna hear about the chandelier incident till the day we graduate..."

"On the bright side, at least, we made a title for ourselves..." I comment.

But the guy stares at Ace and raises his finger to his chin: "Oh yeah! And you're the one who received even more punishment by stealing the dorm leader's tart last night! I feel so lucky that I got to meet the notorious newcomers first thing in the morning."

Before Ace could respond, the guy whips out his cellphone with a diamond themed cover: "Hey, hey, hey, let's take a selfie! I want a pic with the latest celebrities of Raven College! Yaaay!" he cheers, as he snaps our photo and fiddles with his phone for a little.

"Can I put this on Magicame? Tell me your names so I can put you in the tags."

"I'm Deuce Spade," replies Deuce without a moment's hesitation.

"Ace," mumbles Ace reluctantly, while glaring at Deuce for being so forthcoming with stating your name.

"My name is Grim and this here, is my henchman," Grim holds his head up high, as he introduces himself, while pointing at me.

I pinch Grim's cheek and speak out for myself: "Am not! My name's Lilith."

The guy nods and types our names before putting his phone away: "Hoi, upload has finished! Ah, I'm your senpai, third-year Cater Dimond. Call me Cater. Cay is fine, too. Nice to meetcha~" he greets them with a wave.

I think that Cater's welcoming and carefree attitude is refreshing and I smile back with a friendly grin: "Nice to meet you, too".

Cater turns towards me: "Ah, I've heard about you, you're the little supervisor from the Ramshackle Dorm. Good for you, living in a place like that! It's super dark and you can't get good reception in there. You have my sympathy."

"This guy is really running his mouth," grumbles Grim.

Cater's smile soon switches into a panic, as he grabs his paintbrush: "Ah, I don't have any time for small talk! The party is in two days. I don't wanna lose my head for being late."

He turns towards us with a playful smile: "Hey, you guys, will you help with painting the roses?"

"But why are you doing something so weird?" asks Ace.

"Red roses at a party are the most photographic! I guess? I've also got to change the flamingos' colour for the croquet match. So I'm busy with all this work."

"You're changing flamingos' colours!? Your chores are so weird," comments Grim.

"So the tart that Ace ate was going to be used for the dorm leader's party? Oh, that's why he was so mad..." Deuce deduces.

"Nope? That's not it," replies Cater.

"It's not!? Then who's birthday is it?" snaps Ace.

"It's not anyone's birthday. The day after tomorrow is our dorm's traditional 'Unbirthday Party'. The dorm leader chooses a random day that isn't anyone's birthday and we have a tea party," Cater explains.

"What the heck is that!?" exclaims Ace in confusion.

"Later, worry about the reason later! All you have to do now is make the roses red! Deuce-chan, Grim-chan, you two can do it with magic. Ace-chan, Supervisor-chan, since you can't use magic, here's some paint," Cater dismisses Ace, as he hands Ace and me some paint buckets and a brush.

"We can change the colour with magic..." mutters Deuce in disbelief.

"I've never done anything like that," grumbles Grim.

"Okay, it's fine, just relax! We'll figure it out! We'd better hurry if we don't wanna lose our heads to the dorm leader~" Cater utters happily, as we get started.
