Chapter 3: Who Am I, Where Do I Come From?
----------------------
"Then, Lilith, I'm terribly sorry about this, but... we must have you leave the school. Those without any talent for magic cannot be allowed to attend classes here," asserts Principal Crowley to me.
I feel scared: Where would I go? What will happen to me? My whole body goes numb.
Principal Crowley's face softens, as he gently leads me towards the Mirror again: "There is no need to worry. The Dark Mirror will send you directly back from whence you came. Enter the Gate and picture your home clearly in your mind..."
I close my eyes to do as he has instructed, but my mind draws a blank. My home... What does it look like? Is there a house, a garden? How does my family look like? Do I have siblings or am I the only child? I hope I could go back... This sure is a long dream...
In the meantime, Principal Crowley chants what sounds like a spell: "Oh, Magic Mirror! Guide this one back to the place she belongs to!"
I wait and wait... But nothing happens... I open my eyes hesitantly and I can still see Principal Crowley. We are still in the room.
"Ahem! Once more. Oh! Magic Mirror! Guide this..."
"It is nowhere...," interrupted the Mirror.
"What did you say?" Principal Crowley sounds incredulous.
"The place she belongs to is nowhere in this world... It does not exist."
"That is unbelievable! Hmm, well, the unbelievable has been on parade today. This is the first time it's ever happened since becoming Headmaster."
He turns towards me and studies me again: "Where exactly did you come from?"
I shake my head: "Truth is... I don't remember where I came from... All I remember is waking up in the Gate and Grim's shouting..."
His gaze turns serious: "You don't remember anything?"
I nod. I really don't remember anything about myself other than my name. With every question he asked, I shook my head. His questioning only made me feel more lost and confused.
But suddenly, Principal Crowley's eyes lit up: "Come with me to the library, Lilith." He leads me out of the room towards the library.
----------------------
Principal Crowley pores over several books, flipping through the pages, before sighing in defeat, as he closes the last book: "There really isn't anything. Not even the world map, but the name of your home, Kamisutori, isn't recorded in the Dark Mirror... Are you telling the truth? You aren't lying by any chance?"
Feeling reproached by his mild glare, I shake my head rapidly.
"By looking at all the records, there's a possibility that you're from another world," mutters Principal Crowley, as he rests his left index finger on his lip pensively.
Widening my eyes in shock, I blurted out in disbelief: "Another world!?"
Principal Crowley nods empathetically, then realizes something. "Oh yes! Maybe this can jog your memory!" Then he rummages through his cape and pulls out a cute black sheep doll with a pair of black ears and spiral beige ram-like horns sticking out from under a glorious black afro wig. He is wearing a brown vest with buttons lined along the middle and a black stubby tail poking out of it. The bottom of his left foot has his name stitched onto it: "Wolly". I can't quite put my finger on it, but it looks familiar. (A picture of Wolly above this chapter.)
Principal Crowley hands me the doll: "I apologize that I haven't given it to you earlier. It was left behind in your Gate when I came to get you."
As I hold Wolly in my hands, a warm, familiar feeling of comfort comes over me.
I looked up at Principal Crowley: "It does feel familiar, but... I'm still not getting any memories back."
"Still, we are getting somewhere," replies Principal Crowley with a smile. "Other than your doll, do you have any identification, like a student card, name on a shoe... You appear to be empty-handed."
I reach into my skirt pockets and pull them out to reveal nothing.
I nod: "Now that you mention it, I don't even have my phone."
"Hmmm... what should I do? This is concerning... On the one hand, I can't just let someone with no magic stay at the school. On the other hand, as an educator, I can't just toss a penniless young child out on the street with no form of communication!" Principal Crowley drifts off.
I feel nervous: Where would I stay for the night?
Suddenly, Principal Crowley's eyes light up, as he raises his index finger in the air: "That's right! There is an unused building on campus. It was once used as a dormitory in the past: if you clean it up, you could sleep there for the time being. In the meantime, I will look for a way for you to return home."
I am filled with relief and gratitude.
Principal Crowley proclaims excitedly, as we exit the library: "My generosity is limitless! I am a model for all educators. We had better be on our way to the dormitory: it may be a bit old, but there is a certain charm to it."
