Chapter 12: Defeat is not an option!

----------------------

Grim stands hesitantly in front of the mine's entrance: "Lilith ... do you really think it'll go as planned? I'm sca...no, just nervous," he corrects.

"We'll make it somehow...," I reply.

Ace chimes in with a sly smile: "Or not..." Then he shrugs: "Let's get this over with!"

"Grim, you're up!" Deuce signals, while hiding at his assigned position beside the entrance of the mine. Ace and I also get into our hiding spots, bracing ourselves, as we watch Grim enter the mouth of the mine.

----------------------

A while later, I begin to hear the pitter-patter of Grim's running feet and a familiar roar approaching us.

"Hey, ugly! Over here! Look what I got, a magic crystal!" Grim taunts the monster. He dangles a 'fake' magic crystal that Ace has transformed by adding a shimmery rainbow surface on it.

The deceptive rainbow sparkling lights, bouncing off the cavern walls of the mine, catch the attention of the monster. It hesitates a moment, looking back at its magic crystal that it is guarding. Yet, it does get tempted at the prospect of obtaining another magic crystal. Howling at Grim, the monster chases after Grim who scuttles off at top speed out of the mine: "GIVVEEE MEEEE!!!"

The plan is working! The monster is out of the mine, leaving the real magic crystal unprotected!

"Gah! It's coming!" yelps Grim, as he tosses the stone over to me before he speeds towards Ace to set up the next step of the plan.

I pop out of my hiding spot and wave my candle stand to draw the monster towards me: "Hey monster! Over here! I got the magic crystal! "

Confused and disoriented, the monster turns towards me after noticing the 'fake' magical crystal in my hand.

"Grr!? There... thief... too. Won't give... It's mine! Mine!!" The monster growls, swinging the pickaxe at me. Phew! I manage to dodge it, in the nick of time.

"Pyah! That swing could have taken your head off!" Grim blurts out.

I raise my arm straight up in the air like a general initiating battle—it is a signal to ambush the monster: "Now!"

Ace jumps out of his hiding spot and takes over the battle, while I go hide. It's time for those with the magic to get into action!

"Ok, I got this! Let's go, Extra Large Tempest!" Ace summons a large gust of wind, while Grim, standing beside him, sprays out a super-sized fireball, three times his size: "And the Great Grim's Fire special! Ffgnaaaaaa!" With their powers combined, they create an extraordinary fire tornado. Neither could have done it on their own.

"Gugggghhh!!!" the monster screams in pain, as the fire tornado engulfs its body. The slime turns into hot boiling liquid, literally cooking the monster alive.

"How's that!? I can even fan Grim's shoddy flame into an inferno!" Ace shows off.

Grim whips his head sharply to snap at Ace: "It's not shoddy! Without my fire, your wind is just a puff of useless air. Like your words. Ugh, every word out of your mouth pisses me off!"

"Stop squabbling! Let's focus," I whisper loudly. I hustle them out of harm's way towards a hiding spot, where we could see everything going down.
