Chapter 25: Egg fight!

----------------------

"Grim, launch a fireball!" I instruct Grim as we are deep in the heat of the battle.

Grim nods and unleashes a ball of fire towards their opponents. However, Pink Hair countered it with a wind attack that nearly struck us.

I whip my head around to direct Deuce: "Deuce, quick! Summon- Ugh!" I hiss in pain, as I feel my cheek sting with pain.

"That should stop you from barking orders! You're a bloody annoying girl!" exults Grey Hair, as he lands a vicious punch on me.

Without skipping a heartbeat, I pounce on Grey Hair and bite his right arm. Taken completely by surprise, Grey Hair totters backwards and falls down. He lets go of the wand that he was holding. Grim runs and grabs hold of Grey Hair's wand, rendering him powerless and useless. Terrified, Pink Hair runs to the aid of his friend.

In the meantime, I stand there, completely stunned by what I have done. Deuce and Grim come up alongside me, looking down on our weakened opponents. Grim smirks, "Hehe, you got your ass whooped by a little girl XD."

Deuce then joins in: "Well, if you don't want the whole school to hear about this, you should cough up the money for our eggs. And we'll pretend this didn't happen."

Pink Hair and Grey Hair start to talk to one another in furious whispers. They pull out their wallets and riffle through the bills inside. With a heavy sigh, Pink Hair hands the money over: "Alright, here's the money. Now hand over the wand."

The moment Grim returns the wand, the two guys take off.

"Apologize 100 times next time you eat eggs, Dumbas*es!" Deuce yells after them and starts to sprint after them.

Grim and I struggle to hold Deuce back.

"Deuce! It's okay. We won! Please calm down!" I tell him firmly, while tightening my grip around him a bit more.

Finally, after a few moments, Deuce's outburst subsides: he finally stops thrashing around in our hold. I could hear him taking in deep breaths before emerging from his rage: "Huff, huff... ugh!" We loosen our grip as Deuce finally calms down.

"What's gotten into you!? You were really scary back there," asks Grim.

Deuce looks down in shame: "Sorry, I-I screwed up... I vowed that I'd definitely, definitely be an honours student this time!"

"Eeh?" Grim and I reply in unison.

Deuce sighs heavily before he begins recounting his past to us: "In middle school, all I ever did was screw around... I constantly skipped school and spent all my time getting into fights. I disrespected my teachers, hung around sketchy upperclassmen and bleached my hair a lot... even ran around all over the place riding a magical wheel. I was a terrible person who went as far as to use magic to lord over those who couldn't."

"Well, you did some good negotiation back there. But it was pretty hard holding you back just now!" blurts out Grim.

I run my hand behind my neck and admit sheepishly: "I never would've guessed."

Deuce bites his lip before continuing, "Then, one night... I saw my mum hiding away in tears as she called my grandma: 'Was the way I raised him wrong? Would it have been better if he had had both parents?' She was wrong. Mom never did anything wrong. It was all me! So when the carriage from Night Raven College came to get me, my mom was so happy that I got accepted at a prestigious school. I don't want to make her cry again. This time, I'm going to be an Honours student my mum can be proud of... Then I do this. Shit!" He curses in frustration.

"But, y'know... Does being an Honours student mean you have to grin and bear everything?" consoles Grim.

"Huh?" Deuce looks at him in confusion.

"Those delinquents deserve another 10 punches, if you ask me! You fought them off before I could, though," proclaims Grim.

I nod my head vigorously, "Yeah, that's right! You did nothing wrong."

Deuce looks at us sceptically, "You guys... Do you mean what you've said?"

"Honours students get mad, too, and you didn't fight for nothing. You were just protecting us... again..." I reaffirm our statements.

Suddenly, a woman's smiling face, illuminated by the glow of an egg-shaped lamp behind her, emerges from the fog of my memories. Her gentle sky blue eyes that resemble mine are gazing down upon a little girl. She looks a lot like me, maybe when I am five! I watch the woman place the little girl in a bed that I remember seeing in my dream. The familiar red-and-white rose-patterned bedsheets and the round pillow with a checkered pattern on the bed where the little girl lay are exactly the same. A lavender scent is suspended in the air. I inhale deeply, as though I can truly breathe in the aroma from that room. I am once again transported to the warm and familiar place that feels like home.

Putting two and two together, I gasp slightly, realising that I now know how my mother looks like. At that very moment in time, I am struck with a strange mixture of excitement and sadness, excited at these stirrings of the recollections of my past, but sad because these mental pictures only trigger so many more unanswered questions.

A grey paw waving in front of my face penetrates into my blurring vision, dispersing my memory: "Yoho~ Earth to Lilith? You still in there? Why the waterworks?" Grim sticks his inquisitive face into mine. I quickly use my sleeve to wipe away the tears from my eyes.

"It's nothing; the bruise is just starting to hurt." I wave Grim away. "Shouldn't we head back to the shop for more eggs."

Deuce snaps to attention: "She's got a point." But before walking off with us, he looks down sadly at the broken eggs: "May those baby chicks rest in peace."

"Um... Deuce, I hate to say this, but there won't be any chicks. These eggs are different from those that hatch," I explain, while patting Deuce gently on his shoulders.

Deuce's eyes widen in shock and he lets out a yelp of disbelief that echoes in the air: "Eeeeeeeehhhhhh!? You've gotta be kidding!?!?"

----------------------

"Oh, you're finally back. That sure took a while," snaps Ace. But then he sees my face and he blurts out in shock:"Woah! What happened to your face, Lilith!?"

"Well..." I sigh heavily before telling Ace and Trey about the fight with Grey Hair and Pink Hair. But I leave out Deuce's personal story.

"Good job, Deuce! You sure showed them!" praises Ace, "I'm sorry I missed it!"

Trey bends down to inspect my lip injury: "You'll have to go to the infirmary after this. However, it's lucky enough that the wound isn't so deep," he informs me before taking the ingredients from us.

"So... how many times does this make, with me going to the infirmary?" I joke.

Deuce smirks at me playfully for a moment before replying: "This counts as the third."

"But Lilia-senpai healed me in the cafeteria!" I protest lightly before Ace cuts in, "Yeah, but he used the same healing spell used in the infirmary to heal you, so...that counts. Back to being three times the charm~"

"Oh, come on!" I whine and pout, while Grim and the others laugh at me.
