Chapter 24: Tart-to-drama
----------------------
"Puuaaaaah! We're finally done with the peeling!" Ace sighs heavily as he leans his back against the kitchen counter.
"My fingers feel numb..." I groan, as I do the same, after removing the gloves.
Deuce joins in the chorus of pain, as he pushes his finished bowl forward as well: "My arms hurt..."
Trey strides over and collects the bowls of chestnuts: "Good job. Your hard work will make it tastier."
"I'm full just from the smell of chestnuts," declares Grim contentedly.
Trey pours the chestnuts into a bowl, then with a flick of his magic pen, the chestnuts turn into smooth, creamy paste. "Next, we mix the butter and sugar together into the chestnut paste and then, add oyster sauce as a secret ingredient."
"Oyster sauce?!" exclaim Ace and Deuce in unison, while I too wince at the mention of the secret ingredient.
However, Trey nods indifferently, seemingly oblivious to our disgusted reactions: "Yep. The savory taste of oysters adds depth and richness to the cream. You'll see."
Before any of us could speak, Trey pulls out an actual oyster sauce bottle from the cardboard: "This is no ordinary oyster sauce. It's the young oyster sauce with the Walrus' Seal of Excellence. All the famous patisseries in the Queendom of Roses use this brand for their tarts."
"Seriously... That's a pretty salty sauce," mutters Deuce, unconvinced.
"Ummm... I just remember that the tart I tasted was really good. After all, people put curry in chocolate all the time in our queendom... it might be good," Ace responds.
Trey bursts into laughter, pointing his finger at all of us: "Pfft! Ahaha! It's a joke. You should see your faces! Oyster sauce does not belong in sweets."
Ace's eyes narrow and he snaps at Trey: "Sc*** you! You said it with a straight face."
Trey continues to laugh: "Haha! If you had taken a second to think about it, you would've figured it out. Don't just accept things without a healthy amount of scepticism."
Grim folds his paws as he settles down next to me: "The guy may seem nice, but he's pretty good at lying..." Somehow, Grim is impressed.
Trey moves on, "Next is the whipped cream... Ah!" He exclaims suddenly, as though he has just realised something.
"What's the matter?" asks Ace.
"You all gathered so many chestnuts that I got ahead of myself and made too much chestnut paste. We don't have enough whipped cream to mix it together," he explains.
"I can go out and buy some. Is it sold at the school store?" Deuce insists.
Trey nods at his offer: "You can find anything at that place so it should be there." Then he grabs a piece of paper and pen to put together a list of things needed: "In fact, could I ask you to pick up a few other things? Two cartons of milk, a dozen eggs, aluminium cups, and five cans of fruit..."
"I don't think I can carry all that alone. Lilith, do you mind coming with me?" asks Deuce.
"Sure! It sounds fun, since it's my first time going to the school store," I spring into action.
"I'm going too! I'm tired of mixing flour endlessly," Grim hops into my arms before catching him in my arms. Poor Ace has to stay behind to help Trey make the crust.
