Chapter 14: The calm before the storm

"Haaaaaah... Expulsion rescinded... I'm beat," sighs Deuce, as he leans against a stone column nearby in the exterior hallway.

"Oh my, oh my..." sighs Ace, matching Deuce in fatigue.

But Grim's eyes light up, as he queries me all of a sudden: "Oh, yeah. Lilith, did you manage to get a memory through all that action?"

I feel Ace and Deuce turn their gaze towards me.

I look at Grim in confusion and replies, slightly annoyed: "Why would you think that this type of situation would make me remember anything?"

Grim shrugs his shoulders: "Oh well, it doesn't matter. Why don't you just forget about the past and think about how cool our lives would be as Night Raven students!"

"Wait, Lilith, you're an amnesiac?" asks Deuce, with slight worry on his face.

I nod: "Well yeah, it's not a secret anyway..."

"Do you remember anything at all from your past?" probes Ace, full of curiosity.

I shake my head, as I reply pensively: "I don't know who I am or where I came from, or how I came to the college. All I remember is just being put in the coffin and waking up when Grim burst through my gate in the Mirror chamber."

Grim puffs up his cheeks angrily at my comment before replacing it with a grin and dancing around: "Lalala~I am starting as a student of Night Raven College tomorrow! I'm gonna leave you all in the dust and take the top spot!"

"You talk big for someone who is only half a full student... Anyway, it's fine," comments Ace. But he looks down fondly at Grim with a playful smile.

Deuce walks up and pats me on the shoulder: "We're classmates tomorrow, Supervisor, Grim."

A smile spreads across my face, as I extend my hand to shake Deuce's hand in a formal introduction: "Yep, it's nice to meet you!"

"Saying that again is really embarrassing, will you stop?" remarks Ace.

Deuce lets out a throaty chuckle: "Pff, that's true. Even if we don't want to, we're going to see each other every day. I'm stuck in Heartslabyul, with this jerk."

"Trust me, the thought of seeing your serious mug every day is no fun either," retorts Ace.

Deuce folds his arms and glares slightly at Ace: "That's my line, truant Ace."

Ace smirks playfully: "Sure, sure. Almost-expelled-crybaby Deuce. Alright, we need to take Supervisor to the infirmary. Come on, we'll show you the way."

He strides ahead, with Deuce following suit. But before we go, I come up with an idea: "W-wait! Ace, Deuce, want to try out the ghost camera for us to capture a memory of our crazy adventure?"

"Hey, great idea! I'm ready!" Grim leaps onto the top of my head without a moment's hesitation. I take out the camera from the pouch and hand the camera over to Ace to take the shot. Ace crouches down beside me and Deuce positions himself behind us.

"Alright, I'll click on the count of three. One, two, three!" Ace clicks. The shutter opens and closes and our special moment—the monster-slaying team—is captured forever.

Once the memory has been developed, Ace grabs the picture and pulls out his magic pen. He scribbles something on it before handing it back to me.

I look at where he writes 'The first day of college' and smile at the picture before Ace returns the camera back to me while I place the camera and photo into the sling bag.

"Alright, now that's over, let's go Supervisor, you too, Mr. Serious Face," Ace pokes fun at Deuce again.

Deuce frowns slightly, shakes his head, before following Ace.

"Ah, those names... I feel like those are gonna stick," I mutter.

Grim leaps into my arms and whispers, "Those guys might be a good combo. They're the "fight because they're so close" type."

I glance at the duo ahead of us, before nodding at Grim's comment: "Come on, let's get you healed. Tomorrow, we aren't the handymen! Finally... finally! Our bright and shiny academy life at Night Raven College begins!" He cheers happily.
