Distant voices fill the empty silence in the child's head. There's a ringing in his ears that pulls him into reality once again. To his dismay, he's still in this place, still in the same chair, in the same clothes. He can't see much, eyes taking quite a while to adjust fully to the lightness that had taken over the darkness. They had drugged him. They had drugged him. Steve, someone who he had considered family, how could he do this to him?
He opens his eyes a little wider now, and can see that he's the only one in the room. His ankles and wrists ache from the tightness of the straps holding him down. The cloth is still in his mouth, keeping him forcibly silent and disabling his cries.
Peter still tries though, muffled shouting to try and attract anyone's attention. But, that was a bad idea. The only people he attracted were his captors. The Winter Soldier and Steve walk into the damp room, both staring at the kid who had now stopped yelling.
"Mornin' kid." Steve says, "I promise you won't be here long now." There were two extra chairs in front of him, but he keeps his eyes on the ground as the two sit down. "Two hours and Tony'll be here to collect you."
And although he doesn't make any movements, Peter's so relieved to here those words, but he won't let them see that.
"Can you look at me?" Steve asks, taking a deep breath and running his hand through his hair. "Kid. I'm sorry. I still care about you, of course I do."
He's met with nothing, not even a glance.
"Listen, I can take out the gag, but you have to promise you'll be quiet. Nod if you understand." Steve continues, needing a reaction from him to make himself feel better.
And although he doesn't want to give them any satisfaction, he does want to be able to speak again, so he nods. Steve approaches him and loosens the cloth so that it hangs around his neck after it's pulled from his mouth.
"You don't care about me." Peter whispers, tears stinging his eyes as he finally looks up at him.
Steve swallows and then speaks, "You know that's not true. I wish I didn't have to do this, I really do."
"Then just let me go. You said dads coming for me, right? So he obviously complied with whatever you wanted. Let me go, Steve. Please..."
"You know I can't do that until Tony hands me the new accords, we need you to stay here." Steve sighs, getting more and more exasperated.
"Maybe we could just let him out of the restraints?" The Winter Soldier speaks up, shocking the child to his very core. He sounds so sincere and caring.
"Buck. You know we can't." Steve replies, shaking his head and smiling softly.
"Please. I won't fight, I swear... I swear... I promise... please..." Peter begs, twisting his hands to try and relieve some of the pain they're causing. "Just my wrists."
"Okay, but you have to understand that if you try anything, we'll have to restrain you again?" Steve asks, sympathising with the kid in front of him.
"Yes... yes I understand..." Peter nods, a sigh of relief leaving his lungs. Once his hands are free, he starts to feel a little better, not much, but still a bit better. He rubs his fingers over the red skin that surrounds his wrists, wincing when he touches a particularly sore part.
And as he looks down at the pain that they've caused him, he begins to get upset again.
"How could you do this to me?" Peter asks, tears starting to fall from his eyes as he looks up to Steve.
"Please don't cry, kid. I- it's gonna be okay, Tony's coming soon."
"If you just let me leave... just let me go and I promise you'll still get what you want..." He says quietly, and then he reached down to start undoing the straps around his ankles. He barely even gets to touch it before Steve's at his side, pulling his hand away.
"Don't. Just another little while and you can go home." Steve says softly, his fingers still wrapped softly around the kids arm.
"Don't touch me... we're not friends... you're not my friend..." Peter looks down at the floor, sniffing to try and stop his nose from running.
Steve lets go, but is still wary of the child trying to get out of the restraints.
"Stark's early." Bucky says plainly, looking around the corner of the door, and sure enough, there's the faint sound of a car.
"Okay, listen, we're gonna go outside and lock the door. When Stark gives us the new accords, we'll give him the key." Steve explains to him, "I'm sorry, kiddo, until next time."
And then the two walk out, leaving Peter completely alone, he immediately starts to free his ankles once the door is shut. It doesn't take him long, and as soon as he's free he runs to the locked door. And although he knows it's useless, he still tries to open it. He hits it and the sound echoes off the walls, over and over until a key can be heard opening the lock. Peter stands back, and waits until the door begins to push open.
"Kiddo?" Tony's head pokes around the door carefully, his voice is shaky and nervous. And then he sees his kid, and he runs to him and picks him up.
"Dad!" Peter says happily, jumping up into his arms and hugging him as tight as possible.
"Hey... hey baby, hi... you okay?" Tony asks sympathetically, "Are you hurt?" He puts his fingers in Peter's hair, holding him close and breathing out a sigh of relief.
Tony inspects him and he runs his fingers across Peter's jaw gently. "What did they do to you?"
Dark bruises had formed from where Bucky's metal hand had covered his mouth and held him still. "Shit."
"I'm alright." The kid starts, letting go of his dad's arm and holding his hand instead as Tony leads him out of the building.
"Did they say anything about where they were going?"
"No. Didn't tell me anything. They didn't say much at all, just that they were sorry." Peter replies, looking down at the ground.
"Okay, that's alright, that's fine." Tony smiles, he lifts Peter's hand up to his chest, and then his smile fades.
"What happened to your wrists?"
"Nothing, dad, it's okay, they're just marked from the restraints." Peter says nonchalantly, looking up to assure his father that he's okay.
"I'll kill them." Tony mutters under his breath.
"Really... I'm fine." Peter smiles softly as they walk closer towards the exit.
"It's good to have you back, kid. I missed you more than you'll ever know." Tony says, rubbing his fingers over Peter's knuckles lovingly.
"Missed you too."
