So close, yet so far apart

"Mr. Stark? Do you think we're ever gonna get out of here?" The kid asks quietly. They've been stuck in this room for most of a month now. And as the days go by, the two just get weaker and weaker. Peter's hair sticks to his warm head, he has lashes and bruises covering all of his body, he's got a black eye and his hands ache from the chains securing him.
"Kid. You got nothing to worry about." Tony replies, though the sight of him would disagree with his words. He's worse than Peter is. He takes as much of the abuse that he can, he talks back to protect the kid from getting even more hurt. He keeps their attention on him.
Peter's loved Tony for a long time though, moved into a room in the tower over a year ago. He loved him more than anyone in the world. And that's what made this so hard. Not the hurt, not the words, not the pain. But the fact that they weren't able to embrace each other. The sick bastards who did this to them made it so that Peter and Tony are as close as they can be to each other without being able to touch one another.
The kids had a few breakdowns, there's been a few times when he's cried and begged for them to let him into Tony's arms. This mainly happens after they hurt him. The only thing that he wants is to lie down beside his father figure and go to sleep. It was torture of the worst kind. It got to Tony more than it did to Peter, although he hadn't shown it. He'd sob quietly when the kid fell asleep, and he'd blame himself for not being able to comfort him. He had a lot of guilt, but getting Peter dragged into this mess made him wish that he was never born.
"I miss you, Mr. Stark." Peter whispers, tears beginning to fill his eyes for the countless time.
"I'm right here, kid. You've got me." Tony smiles a sad smile, and sits up on his knees, despite the agony that seems to attack his whole body. "This won't be forever, soon you'll wake up and this will just feel like a bad dream, and then you'll come and lay down with me and we'll fall asleep together."
"We've been gone for weeks, people know we're missing and they still can't find us. I don't want to die here, I can't reach you and I don't wanna die all alone." Peter breaks into a cry, lifting his knees up to his chest and thrashing his arms to try and break the chains.
"Kid, listen to me. We're gonna be fine. You know how much the Avengers care for you, once they find this place we can go home. And I promise you, that they're trying as hard as they can." The older reassures him, even though in his own mind he's starting to think that maybe the kids right.
An hour or two passes before the two are interrupted by sound of the door opening. Peter instinctively backs up into the wall and Tony puts on his best brave face.
"Good afternoon. How are you both?" A smug man says, walking in with a plate full of food. Neither of them reply, too worried that if they talk back they'll hurt the one person they care about.
"Silent treatment, huh? Well, doesn't matter. The food is for you." He huffs out, and sits the plate down beside Tony.
"I don't want it," he says calmly, "the kid needs it more than I do."
"I don't give a shit about what you want. You'll eat it, or you'll regret it."
"Why are you such an asshole? Just give the food to the kid and leave us alone." Tony snarks, pushing the plate towards Peter. But the man steps on his hand, causing Tony to gasp out in pain.
"Either you eat, or you face consequences." The man spits angrily, removing his shoe from Tony's hand, and watching to see what he does.
"Mr. Stark? Just do it, you need this. I'm okay." Peter says kindly with a weak smile on his face.
"When are you gonna let him eat?" Tony asks in a cold voice, "He's fourteen. Doesn't that mean anything to you?"
"No." The man smirks, "You know what? I think we should have a chat, grown up to grown up."
"Alright, you wanna talk? You're a sadistic piece of shit and when I get out of here, you'll rot in a prison cell until you die. Is that enough of a chat for you?" Tony asks sarcastically, purposely ignoring the fear on Peter's face. It becomes harder to ignore as the man walks towards Tony and grabs him by the throat.
"You should watch your mouth when you're talking to your superiors. It might get you killed."
Tony grunts a little as he tries to breathe properly, "Go fuck yourself." But the hand tightens even more around his neck, although Tony doesn't seem too bothered.
"Stop it! Stop!" The kid yells, he's too worried. Not that Tony is. He just stares at the man with defiance in his eyes, coughing and choking a little bit, but he doesn't let the man see his fear.
"Let's get out of here, Stark. I want to see how brave you are when you're all alone." The man smiles, taking a key out of his pocket to disconnect Tony from the wall. He shoves him out of the door, one hand gripping his hair tight and the other holding his jaw.
"No! Let him go! Stop it!" Peter screams in a panic, he rattles the chains but he can't do much else.
"I'm alright, kid. You gotta-" Before Tony has a chance to finish his sentence, the heavy door slams behind him, leaving Peter in a frenzied state, screaming and shouting for anyone to help.
After about twenty minutes, two men pull Tony in by under his shoulders, his arms hang limply and his feet drag on the floor. There's blood pouring from his mouth and he seems to be unconscious.
"Mr. Stark!" The kid shouts with tears in his eyes, "What'd you do?! What'd you do to him?!"
"What's it look like?" One of the men chuckles dryly, "We broke him."
"Just let me near him! Please! I just wanna touch him!" He begs, trying desperately to get closer to Tony.
"He will die, and you won't be able to hold him." The other man smiles, slamming the door behind him.
"I can't! I can't reach you! Mr. Stark! I ca..." Peter breaks into a sob, "I can't reach you..."
This was so bad. This was a nightmare. This was worse than a nightmare.
The kid reaches a hand out, his fingers so close to Tony's hand, so close but not close enough. And he can't take it, he lets out a scream of anger and frustration, waking Tony in the process.
"Oh my God. You're alive. You're okay. Thank God." Peter cries out, still reaching out towards him. The tears are starting to fade as he starts to calm down. But all that changes when his mentor breaks. Tony starts sobbing, curling in on his chest and choking on air as he rocks back and forth on the ground.
"Mr. Stark?" Peter asks, the sight of him is enough to make him start crying again. But Tony doesn't say anything, just continues to splutter and sob, blood leaving his mouth every time he gasps.
"I'm sorry... I..." Peter whispers in broken voice. "I can't hold you..."
The silence is deafening, just shallow breaths and weak whimpers as the two sit in despair.
But then the wall next to the door crumbles to the ground with a loud bang. Shouting and curses is all that can be heard from the people becoming to swarm in the room. Not people. Heroes.
Shouting. A lot of shouting.
Everything is so loud and bright that it takes Peter a minute to even realise what's going on. Nat's arms are around him when he comes back to reality, she kisses his cheek and wipes away his tears. She snaps the locks on the chains as Rhodey does the same for Tony.
Everything seems to happen so fast, they're trying to get the two of them outside, somewhere safer than here at least. But Tony's hoarse voice sounds through the room.
"Just let... let me touch him..."
The agents in the room stop what they're doing, and Peter crawls over on his knees to reach his father figure. Tony looks up at him with loving eyes, he almost looks as though he's dreaming. He lifts his hand up and puts his fingers through the kid's hair. And that's all it takes. Peter collapses on top of him, clinging to him with all his strength, he's sobbing again. But so is Tony. The two of them just embrace each other for as long as the people around them let them. And then they're moved out to an ambulance waiting outside, but they were both are practically stuck to each other, even in the vehicle. Tony kept his hands on Peter's face, one placed in his hair gently and the other lovingly on his cheek. He must've kissed the kids forehead a hundred times before he fell asleep, finally content.
Nat and Rhodey were speechless, neither of them could even imagine what they went through for all those weeks, but it was clear that they hadn't been allowed near each other. They got the guys responsible, they always did. But Jesus, Tony was too close to death. Any longer and he might not have lived. They were lucky to find this place when they did. But he was fine. He's Iron-Man. A superhero. He always gets better. But, of course, Peter and Tony didn't leave each other's sides for months after that. Peter had even slept beside him at nighttime for a while after the experience. That brought them together more than any mission ever could. They had each other. That's all they needed, right?
