Never in a million years would Tony have thought that he would have to shoot his child. But, sadly for him, today changed that. It started when FRIDAY was disabled and the front doors opened. The tower was basically empty, other than Tony, Peter, Clint, Steve and Bruce. As Tony panicked about fixing FRIDAY, the security was also disabled. As if that wasn't bad enough, the elevator doors opened at floor fifteen, where six men stepped out. They were all tall, muscly and, curiously, not wearing any form of mask to hide their identities. The man in front had dark black hair, with dead eyes and a black suit. He was your typical villain, and clearly the leader of the group. The men all raised their guns and pointed them at the heroes sitting on the sofa. Wondering what to do, Steve and Tony glanced at each other, but before either of them could get their suits, the man spoke up.
"I'm going to make this simple. Stand up Stark."
Tony cautiously got to his feet, trying to avoid looking at a very worried Peter.
"You too." The man pointed his bony finger at the kid.
Peter stood up quickly, moving himself closer behind his father-figure.
"Remember New York? Captain America? Hawkeye? Hulk?" The man starts with venom filling his voice. "I do. I remember my son underneath a building, screaming. His body burned and the only thing I could do was watch." The man steps dangerously close to Tony, who just stares at him.
"I had to put a bullet in his brain to stop the pain. Do you know how hard that was?!" The sudden change in his tone made Peter flinch and grasp Tony's arm subconsciously.
The man sighed and then smiled.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to do that to your kid, Stark."
Tony resists the urge to make a comment about how Peter isn't his kid, but everyone already knows how close they are.
"But, you are going to shoot him." The man turns to face the others and gestures. Two of the criminals grab the kid, while another two hold Tony back. The final man kept his gun aimed at Steve, Clint and Bruce to make sure they didn't try anything.
"You do this and we'll leave, we will be even then. All you have to do is shoot him. I'm going to give you this gun, there's one bullet. Shoot me and you'll all die. Only one rule- it has to be a clean shot." The man says, loading the gun. But Tony's still fighting, squirming against the arms holding him still.
That's when Peter speaks for the first time. "It's okay, Mr. Stark. I can take it, just do it." He's standing still now, he's stopped struggling against the men who grip his arms to keep him in place.
"Let him go and I'll do it." Tony says, but the guilt is already eating him alive. The main guy gestures to his men, who immediately move away from the kid and Tony. He's holding the gun now, the barrel facing the ground.
"Can I talk to him first? Please?" Tony's breathing heavily already, the stress eating him alive. The man just nods, transfixed on the situation before him. Tony walks towards the kid, who's trying his best at a smile, just like the brave person he is. They're hugging quicker than anything, Peter's hands are around Tony's neck and they stay there for a few moments.
"You're so brave. I'm so proud of you. I'm sorry." Tony whispers to him.
"It's okay. Really." Peter says back to him. And then Tony's guiding him towards a white wall and turning him around. By the time he's done, Peter's against the wall with his left arm out and his back to Tony. And the kid knows how much being shot in the arm is going to hurt, even though he's never been shot before. He's more worried about the psychological damage it will cause Tony. He's right obviously, Tony's already unsure if he can do this. He tries his best to breathe and steadies the gun, aiming for the kid's arm. But his head is spinning and he feels like he's about to throw up.
"Any time you're ready, Stark." The man spits.
"Fuck." Tony lets his arm fall to the floor, the gun facing the floor once again. "I can't. Please. I can't do this."
"It's okay, Mr. Stark." Peter says quietly, turning his head to the right to smile at his mentor.
"You don't have to make him do this." Steve says, trying to make this madness stop.
"Shut up. I'll tell you what Tony, either you shoot him now, or I'll shoot him in the head. And trust me, it won't be difficult for me." The man spits as he glares at the hero.
"Please, Mr. Stark. I'm gonna be okay. I promise." Peter says, closing his eyes again and preparing for the inevitable.
That's when Tony's instincts kick in and he cocks the gun, stepping back once and opening his eyes slowly. He aims, and then he fires. The realisation only sets in after the kid falls to the floor from the impact. The sound is loud enough to burst the ear drums of everyone in the building.
"That's all I wanted. We'll meet again, Stark." The man says, before stepping backwards into the elevator. Tony can't concentrate, he rushes over to his kid, who's now bleeding out onto the floor.
"I'm so sorry, I'm sorry. Please. I'm so sorry." He whispers to the kid over and over. Bruce is already kneeling beside them and tells Tony to bring him downstairs to the lab. Peter's lifted up and brought downstairs, but the blood loss is making him drowsy, and Tony's worried that if he falls asleep he won't ever wake back up again. The tears in Tony's eyes are impossible to ignore as Bruce puts the kid to sleep. The bullet went straight through, so Bruce immediately starts to stitch the kids arm up. The entrance and exit wounds from the bullet are completely covered after ten minutes and Peter's already getting more blood from a drip. It takes around twenty minutes for the kid to wake up, which were spent with Tony holding his hand and blaming himself for the situation. After the first five minutes, Peter is coherent and back to reality.
"Hey." He says quietly, staring up at Tony, making a mental note of his eyes and the obvious crying he had done.
"Hey kiddo. Are you okay?" Tony sniffs.
"Yeah I'm fine. It doesn't even hurt." He lies, "are you okay?"
"No. I just shot you." Tony half laughs and half cries, tears spilling over again.
"It's okay. Mr. Stark. I'm fine, see? Can you lie beside me, please?" Peter's eyes are wide and trusting. Tony wipes his face and sits up on the hospital bed, falling back beside his kid. Peter instantly wraps his arm around him and snuggles into his chest. Tony automatically feels better, putting his fingers in the kids hair lovingly.
"I love you, Mr. Stark." Peter says quietly, closing his eyes again.
"I love you too." Tony says, the guilt still present in his mind, but he almost forgets it at those words. The two of them only last ten minutes before falling asleep, covered in blankets and holding the one person they both cared about the most. If anything, the experience brought them even closer together.
