('What If' Loki didn't throw Tony through the window?)
New York City- 2012
"How will your friends stop me, when they'll be so busy fighting you?" Loki asks rhetorically as he places the sceptre to Tony's arc reactor. He gets no reaction and repeats the process with a confused look. "This normally works."
"Well, performance issues." Tony starts, "It's not uncommon. 1 out of 5-" He's cut off when an angered Loki picks him up by his neck and throws him across the floor.
He stumbles to try and get back on his feet but before he can make a move, Loki has him in his grasp, his hand wrapped tight around the billionaire's jaw.
"You will all fall before me." Loki snarls at him before throwing him to the floor once again.
"JARVIS? Any time now..." Tony gasps out as he pushes himself backwards.
"Is that the name of your robot? Unfortunately he won't be joining us."
"What? JARVIS." Tony repeats louder this time to try and get the AI's attention. "What did you do?"
"I stopped it. Now, you really don't have backup." Loki smirks.
The genius turns to try and run but is stopped when there's a shooting pain in his side. He looks down and realises that he's bleeding, Loki had shot him with the sceptre.
"Your friends will die trying to save this world. They can't close the portal. You're too late." The villain says with a cocky grin.
"You're wrong." Tony grunts, he clasps his side and sits up with his back to the wall.
"That's exactly how your friend died. What was his name? Phil?" Loki taunts, "They couldn't stop the bleeding and then he was gone."
"Fuck you." The genius spits. "Why are you doing this?"
"It is my birthright." Loki replies plainly and then he stops and looks to the roof. "They freed the scientist."
"Erik Selvig? Yeah, he'll stop your portal." Tony says with a smirk. "Looks like your plan is crumbling, Reindeer Games."
"Shut up!" Loki snaps, he strides towards him and bends down so that they're face to face.
Tony doesn't flinch, he doesn't even react. "What? You can't control me." He tells him with a defiance in his eyes that Loki had to admire.
"The Man of Iron. You must have some painful memories." He raises his hand and places it against Tony's head.
And then it's darkness. Moments with his dad flutter through his memory. His parent's death. The kidnapping in Afghanistan. His fight against his mentor, Obadiah Stane. Whiplash attacking him at the race. Everything all at once.
He comes to and puts his hands in his hair, gasping and hyperventilating. "What the fuck?" Tony says breathlessly.
"That looks like it hurt." Loki says with a glad smile. "Now you're going to help me."
"Never." He replies, "I would never do anything to help you."
"You don't have to do anything. Just sit there and look pathetic." Loki replies, "I'm sure my brother will be here soon."
"You're excited about that? Your brother could beat you in a fight with his hands behind his back." Tony says confidently.
Loki gets closer to him, close enough so that the genius can feel his breath on his face. "He won't do anything."
"You sure?"
"Positive. You want to know why?" Loki asks menacingly, as a knife appears in his hand.
Tony doesn't react, "Why?"
"Because if he tries, I'll kill you." He lifts it up and holds it against Tony's neck, so tight that it's almost hard for him to breath.
"No you won't. I know people like you." Tony replies, trying his best to look unbothered.
"You don't know anything." Loki snarls, pressing it tighter to his throat.
"You're a kid who's in too deep." He says with a grunt. "You're angry because your perfect big brother shows you up at every turn. Now you feel like you need to prove yourself. You can lie to-" He lets out a pained gasp when the knife is slashed across his cheek. It's not deep, but it surprised him.
"The next time you speak I will cut your tongue out and make you eat it." Loki says angrily. He flicks his wrists and suddenly Tony's arms are restrained above his head. He groans out in pain, the strain from having his arms lifted made his side ache. He looks down to see blood pouring onto the floor. He rests his head against the wall and takes a few breaths, letting himself close his eyes.
He's awoke by two words. "Hello, brother."
He opens his eyes immediately and looks at Thor, he's standing in the middle of the room, his hammer in his hands and an angry look in his eyes.
"Stop this madness." Thor says loudly, he takes a few steps towards Loki. But he quickly steps back when he points towards Tony.
"Come any closer and he dies."
"Stark. You okay?" Thor asks with a concern in his voice.
"Yeah..." Tony replies, "I'm okay."
Loki appears right beside him, startling the man. "I told you what I'd do if you spoke again."
"Do not lay a hand on him." Thor says angrily.
"You will do what I say or he dies." Loki tells him.
"He won't kill me." Tony says, wincing when the knife is placed against his throat again.
"Are you willing to make that bet?" Loki huffs. "Get your new friends to stand down. And I will let him go."
"I do not own them. I cannot make them stop."
"Fine. I can do it myself." Loki replies.
"Just leave Sta-" Thor's words are cut off as a green mist surrounds Tony and Loki, and then suddenly they appear on the roof. Standing around them is Natasha, Selvig and Clint.
"Holy shit." Hawkeye says looking directly at the two, his breath hitches in his throat when he sees that there's a knife at Tony's neck.
"Let him go." Nat says with a glare as she raises her batons.
"You will all stop resisting unless you want him to die." Loki tells them, he punctuates his sentence with a sharp tug on Tony's hair.
"You're bleeding." Nat whispers, looking at the man's side.
"Not a big deal." The genius says with a pained groan.
"Put your weapons down." Loki orders.
And the two heroes look to him as they slowly place their guns and bow and arrow down.
"Alright, we did it, let him go." Nat says calmly, but she quickly realises that the villain has another plan in mind.
"I think I'd rather kill him and make you watch."
"I'm sorry." Tony says, he tries to turn and face Loki but can't because of how he holding him against his chest.
"For what?" Loki spits.
"What you've been through." He explains, "You're doing this for a reason, what is it?"
"That's none of your business, Stark." Loki tells him, but there's a look in his eyes that's hard to read.
"There's good in you, I can see it. You could've killed all three of us right now." He continues.
"Get on the floor." Loki tries to ignore him and kicks Tony in the back of his legs to make him kneel on the ground. Loki looks up to the sky, watching as the aliens continue to swarm.
"Now leave this alone." He tells them, he disappears, leaving them alone.
"Selvig, you gotta help him." Clint says, rushing over to his friend and putting pressure on his wounded side.
"I'm okay, you gotta- you gotta stop him." Tony replies, replacing Clint's hand with his own.
"He's right, I can take care of him." Erik says.
"Yeah, go. Just go."Everything went to shit after that, without Iron-Man to put the missile in the portal. All they could do was shut it and then try and kill what's left of the aliens. There was hundreds of casualties, a few deaths and many buildings that had fallen to ash. Tony was okay, he was fine after the hospital, but he blamed himself for what happened. Truth is, the world needed Iron-Man more than they knew. Everyone did. If only Tony knew that.
