Von Doom stays and watches, sitting on a chair in the corner as Tony begins to work with what he's got. He knows that he could try and make something faulty as a distraction but Victor knows about his technology, and he can't have him hurting Steve if he finds out. So he does his best, even with Von Doom's eyes on him.
There's an uncomfortable silence for a while before the villain speaks. "How long will this take?"
"You can't rush science." Tony replies.
"What are you going to do," Steve starts, "when he's finished? What happens to us?"
"I'll let you go. No harm done."
"Bullshit." Tony mumbles. "When I'm done, you'll kill us." He speaks more clearly now. "You won't get away with it though."
"Watch it, Stark. Be careful how you speak to me."
"He's right." Steve reaffirms his words, "you will be caught."
"So brave and courageous, even in such a vulnerable position. It's... heroic." Victor walks over to the mattress where Steve is still lying, helpless.
Tony stands up, banging the table to get the villain's attention. "If you touch him, I won't do this."
"God," Von Doom rolls his eyes and bends down, inching closer to Steve's face. "I'm getting sick of the back and forth, you want a bit of candour? Neither of you are getting out of here alive. Neither of you can stop me. What are you gonna do, Stark? Go ahead." He punches Steve hard across the face. "Stop me."
"Don't! I'll fucking kill you!" Tony shouts, trying to reach him and failing.
"Do what I tell you to!" Von Doon startles the hero, he hasn't shouted at him this whole time but he's quickly becoming impatient.
Steve pants quietly, "If he's going to kill us both anyways, you can't make what he wants, Tony."
And the genius knows he's right, he's prepared to die to protect all the innocent people out there.
So he shoves all of his progress and all of the technology off the table and onto the floor. "I won't do it."
Frustration is clear on Von Doom's face but he keeps himself collected. He takes his knife from his belt and smiles. "In Afghanistan," he waves the weapon in Tony's face, "did they break you?"
"I'm still here, aren't I?" The genius replies.
"How much pain did they put you through?" He inches closer.
"Not enough, clearly. I did what I had to do to survive and then I took them all down. I'll do the same to you." His confidence doesn't waver as the knife traces his cheek.
Von Doom lifts him by his shirt and shoves his back onto the table so that he's left lying down facing the villain. Victor circles back around so that he's beside Tony's face and Steve can see exactly what he's doing.
"I did tell you, Stark, that if you disobeyed me again I'd take your other leg. But this is a different level of disrespect, so I'll hurt both your leg and your arm." He plunges the knife in his left arm, so deep that it comes through the other side and hits the metal table underneath.
Tony screams, his vision blurring, as Steve shouts profanities at Victor, the soldier's strength returning gradually, the fact that he's so angry fuelling him more.
Von Doom ignores them both and grabs the handle of the knife. He gets so close to Tony's face that he can feel his breath.
"Mr. Stark." He says, but the hero can still barely think with the agony, so Von Doom grabs his face and makes him look at him. "I'm going to ask you once, and then... then, I'm going to twist the knife in your arm and pull it out. So? Are you going to do what I say?"
Tony gasps, wincing at the thought of the villain's words. He wishes that someone would help him, stop what's inevitably going to happen. But he has to do what he has to do.
"I won't do it..." He whispers, immediately regretting it when the villain follows through, twisting the blade aggressively. Tony screams out again, his voice hoarse and his eyes squeezed shut.
What occurs next is so fast that the billionaire's eyes are still shut when the fight goes down.
Doctor Von Doom's mistake was not drugging Steve for the second time. He thought he had more time before the super soldier would be able to fight again but he was wrong. Steve snapped the vibranium chain in half and was able to throw a punch at Victor before he realised. The soldier continued to punch him until he was on the floor, and still kept going after. Everything he had done to Tony swirled in Steve's mind and he let himself attack. Not stopping until Victor was unconscious and bleeding out on the floor.
Steve stops and rushes to his friend, his knuckles bloody. He almost winces when he sees that the knife is still in his arm.
"Okay- okay- we gotta go, Tony- I- I'm gonna take it out. I need you to stay still." He doesn't wait for an answer before he pulls it out, apologising over and over when his friend cries out.
There's a commotion from outside, and Tony knows that there are more men about to burst in the door.
"Steve-" The genius stops him from breaking the chain around his hands and ankle. "Take his gun- take his gun, there's more of them."
The super soldier pants and then nods, he grabs the firearm and waits behind the door. A few seconds later, three men barge in, rushing to Tony who is still on the table. Before they can reach him, Steve shoots, killing two of them immediately and injuring the other.
"I got ya." Steve reassures Tony, breaking the chains, "can you walk?" He asks gently but he can see that his blood is pouring out quick.
"I don't- don't know, he stitched up my leg- I think- I think I-" Before he can say anything else, his eyes roll back into his head, passing out from the blood loss. When Tony wakes up, his arm has been mended and he's in a comfortable bed. He looks around and sees Steve and Happy sitting patiently by him. Both of them stand when they see that he's awake.
"Hey, Tony. You feeling okay?"
"Yea- yeah. How'd we get out?" He asks.
"I carried you out, found your phone in one of the other rooms. I called Happy and he was already tracking our location. Called for backup and an ambulance and we were out of there within the hour." Steve tells him.
"And Von Doom? Is he alive?"
"Not sure, I found the drugs they used on us and injected him and the other man who was still alive. If he is alive, he's in maximum security and we can see him when you're better."
"Tha-thanks. Thanks for saving me. Both of you." Tony smiles softly.
"It's okay. Glad you didn't die." Happy smirks.
"Yeah. Me too." Tony sighs.
