It hadn't been long since the attack in the church, but they hadn't recovered. Lexi's head still pounded but the ringing had died down a little. She and Mary checked every soldier for a pulse or some sort of life, but there was none. They were all dead, every last one. And if it weren't for Jack, they would be too.

"Anyone?" Mary uttered to Lexi as she approached the girl. Lexi looked up from where she crouched beside a body, two fingers on their neck.

"No." She sighed as she stood up. Looking at the destruction around them, Lexi felt a mixture of feelings. Guilt, grief, hurt. Although the attack was not her fault, she felt stupid for not speaking up on her suspicions. She knew something was off, and she did nothing about it. Perhaps if she had acted on that feeling, then there would be less casualties.

"If it weren't for Jack, we'd be dead too." Mary spoke up, her voice quiet and soft.

Lexi glanced over at the nephilim who stood in the corner, his expression unreadable. "Yeah, that seems to be a recurring thing." She said, looking down at her hands as she cleaned the dirt out from under her nails.

"He's hurting." Mary stated. She had her eyes trained on the boy as she spoke to Lexi.

The younger girl nodded, glancing back at Jack once again. "I know." She simply replied. She wanted to help him, but how could she help someone in pain if she was also hurting herself?

"Talk to him." Mary told her. Lexi looked back to the woman, about to objected but Mary continued. "You're closer to him than I am. He likes you, he'll listen."

Lexi sighed, trying to conjure up some idea of what to say as she turned and slowly approached Jack.

As she now stood in front of him, she opened her mouth to speak, but he beat her to it.

"It's my fault." He said, his eyes staring at the wooden floor. "I said I'd protect them."

Lexi kept her eyes on his face. His expression was blank, but she knew that if he looked up, she'd see the hurt clear in his eyes. "You couldn't have known." She shook her head, "No matter how much we train or we fight, sometimes there's things that we just never see coming. And that's not our fault."

"If I can't keep them safe, then what's the point?" Jack questioned, finally looking up. His eyes made contact with hers, and as she saw the pain evident in his gaze, she felt a small pain in her heart.

She wanted to pull him closer, hold him and tell him everything was going to be okay. But she didn't. Instead, she placed a gentle hand on his shoulder and took a small step closer.
