"Okay!" I call as I burst in through the doors and into Loki's room, "I've finished my pity party and I'm done with this commercial shit! Hearts and Hooves Day sucks ass!"
Loki has his back turned to me in the centre of his cell, sitting down and concentrating on something. He's mumbling things to himself that I can't quite make out. Around him are three of his books, one with its pages completely ripped out, leaving the cover as a sort of carcass.
Loose bits of paper are everywhere! Some even scrunched up into balls and thrown at the wall.
As soon as I enter the room, Loki's head whips around to me. "Rosie... Rose! Hi, Rosie, hi... Rosie... hi, Rosie," he mumbles, shooting up from his spot. He nudges something behind his left hoof, so it's just out of sight for me.
"Whatcha doin'?" I inquire, trotting further into the room.
"N-nothing..." he replies quickly.
"Looks like something," I state, peering into his cell to try and get a better look. He shifts his right hoof next to his left to hide the object better.
"Well, you wouldn't be interested," he says.
"But I am interested," I press.
"You wouldn't even like it. It's not good enough for you," Loki sighs, lowering his head only slightly.
"Aha! So it's for me?"
"What? No... and anyway... you can't make me show you," he lifts his chin up defiantly.
A smirk creeps across my face. "Oh? Can't I?" I grin, opening the cell doors by pressing the green button on the control box and stepping in.
Loki's back hoof steps back. "Eheh... You were right! Hearts and Hooves Day really does, uh... how did you put it? Sucks donkey? And anyway, it's cheesy..." He does a small shrug.
"Not really helping with your situation, Lokes," I smirk, getting closer, "Any other points?"
He starts to back up, shuffling the thing he's trying to hide from me with him. "Ha! Lokes? Really? That's what you're going for?" He fake laughs nervously.
I back him up against the glass wall, so now he's pressed himself up against it. I squint suspiciously into his eyes, our faces only centimetres apart. I can see my reflection in his pupils. He smiles nervously, his eyes darting from me to the glass, then back to me. "What're you really up to?" I ask firmly.
"Oh, up to? N-nothing..." He replies, staring at the ground. I raise an eyebrow in disbelief. "It's... it's a pathetic attempt..."
"You know the librarian's gonna kill you," I chuckle, taking a small step back and gesturing to the book with the pages ripped out.
"She doesn't have to know about it," he winks playfully, making us both laugh lightly.
"So, um... why'd you do that, then?"
He shrugs, "Can't a God of Mischief vandalise some public property once in a while?"
"No, no he can't," I reply, "But he can show me what he's hiding."
"But..."
"Because a certain burrito mare isn't going to give up on said God of Mischeif," I add, grinning. I thought it wouldn't work.
But it did.
He sighs in defeat. "Alright," he licks his dry lips, "I made it for you. It's... it's for Hearts and Hooves Day, I... it's foolish, but I made it from my favourite book so far," he picks up what he was hiding in his hoof and holds it out to me.
I gasp, putting a hoof over my mouth.
I never thought I'd ever get a gift on Hearts and Hooves Day. I never thought anypony'd care, anyway.
But cradled in his hoof... is a delicate little rose made out of paper, the letters still visible.
"Loki..." I whisper, tears filling up in my eyes.
"I know... sorry, it's... it's pathetic," he mutters, placing it roughly on the ground. He raises his hoof over it, obviously about to crush the small paper.
I abruptly slip a hoof over it before he gets the chance, shielding the delicate paper. He stares into my eyes in confusion. "No," I say softly, "It's perfect. Thank you."
He smiles shyly, letting out a small "Eheh..."
"Oh, darn," I continue in mock disappointment, "Now I don't have anything to give you... except..."
"What?" Loki furrows his brow.
I giggle, before reaching my head up, pressing my lips against his. Both of our wings spring out uncontrollably. Sparks fly. And here come the butterflies in my stomach.
The kiss is long, finished with a quick, short one to end it. Dear sweet Celestia, that felt so... amazing. So right, almost wrong.
"Oh my," he breathes.
"Eheh," I chuckle, "Now... I gotta get back to my pity party." I turn to walk away.
"Wait," Loki calls quickly. I turn my head.
"Yeah?"
"You forgot something," he says, picking up the paper rose and tucking it behind my ear affectionately.
A small blush creeps across my face, along with a smile. "Thanks again," I whisper, before hesitantly turning around and out the door, closing them with the buttons on the control box. I trot up to the next set of doors and open one, before looking back to him. "Happy Hearts and Hooves Day, Loki," I say as a goodbye.
"Eheheheh," he chuckles, "Happy Hearts and Hooves Day, Rose."
And with that, I close the doors and leave him there. It's not because I wanted to, because I didn't.
It's just that... I don't know! I guess I'm just scared. I mean, I barely know him... and anyway, I'm a pony, and he's... well, not. It wouldn't work out.
So why am I getting so close to him? Maybe I've gotten too close...
I mean, I'm not supposed to do this. I'm not supposed to... you know... love him.He probably doesn't even like me in that way anyway. Probably just wants to be friends. Yes, that's it.
It's got to be.
It has to be.
...
Right?
