When you heard the news that Flyers starting goalie Ray Emery was going to be out for a while you were ecstatic. Not happy with his injury, but because it meant your boyfriend might get called up to the NHL. He was currently the goalie for the Flyer’s AHL team, the Adirondack Phantoms in New York, which is where you met him. Almost minutes after hearing the news of Emery’s injury you get a text from

Cal: ‘I’m going to the NHL baby!’

You decide to make him his favorite thing for dinner in celebration of this milestone in his career. You were almost done cooking when you heard him enter the apartment you two had recently moved into together. Within a matter of seconds he was in the kitchen with his arms wrapped around you.

“Cal I know you’re excited, but I don’t want this to burn,” you laugh and try to free yourself from his grasp.

“I’m sorry (y/n) I’m just so freaking excited!!” He sounded like a child on Christmas.

You look over at him and he’s practically shaking with excitement.

“Why don’t you wait in the dining room, I’ll be right out with your dinner,” you say as you push him out of the small kitchen.

When you enter the dining room you find him pacing back and forth.

“I know you’re excited about playing in the NHL, but you need to sit down,” you put his plate on the table where he should be sitting and sit down next to it, not waiting for him before you start eating.

He sits down, but doesn’t eat, instead talks a mile a minute about all of the cool people he was going to be able to play with in Philly (including Giroux, one of his favorite players) and how you should visit him.

“Wait, how long are you going to be there?” You ask him, thinking it would only be for a few games.

“I don’t know; who knows how long Emery will be out. And if they like me, they might keep me longer,” his eyes widened at the prospect of staying at the NHL level and not returning to the Phantoms.

He seemed so happy about it that you felt guilty, almost selfish, for wishing it would only be a week or so. You don’t want to be away from him for the rest of the season. Sensing something was wrong, he put his arm around you.

“It’s okay, I know your job requires you to stay here, but you can visit me every weekend if you want,” he leaned over to kiss you on the temple, and you felt reassured.

“Cal, I’m very happy for you, but please, eat your dinner,” you feel like a mother reprimanding her child, but you both laugh and he eventually calms down enough to eat.

“This is a dream come true,” he says after a few minutes.

“Playing in the NHL?” You ask.

“No, having a great girlfriend like you who understands the demands of my career,” he smiles at you lovingly and you smile back.

“But also playing in the NHL,” he adds with a smirk and you can’t help but lean over and kiss him.
