"Put that bundle here." Fernleaf meowed.
Ravenpaw dropped the bundle of marigolds onto a hole. He growled. Why did he have to train as a medicine cat apprentice? Because he was blind? He had tried to convince Sunstar a lot that he could train as a normal warrior, but they wouldn't listen.
Fernleaf pressed her muzzle on Ravenpaw's head. "I'm sorry you're training with me. I must be so cranky and mean!" Fernleaf purred with amusement.
"It's not that . . ." Ravenpaw stammered.
Fernleaf looked at him stiffly. "Very well."
Ravenpaw sighed. All the herbs scents smelled the same, he forgot the leaf shapes that he had to remember and he always brought the wrong herbs to her! How could they give him this job? His paws smelled of herbs and covered of their saps.
"Bring this to Crookednose and tell him to chew it." Fernleaf nudged a plant over to him. Catmint! Ravenpaw grasped it in his jaw and nodded, he had grown used to the camp, but not the cats.
He peered through the elders' den. His nose searched desperately for Crookednose, but the herb scent covered his nostrils.
"Is Crookednose here?" Ravenpaw asked.
"I'm here." A cat responded.
Ravenpaw grunted, he pushed through the den entrance, dropping the catmint.
"I chew it?" Asked the old tom, Ravenpaw nodded.
Crookednose grunted, chewing the minty plant. Ravenpaw was about to exit out when another elder meowed, Ravenpaw turned back. Ears pricked.
"Come here, young'un."
Ravenpaw turned stiffly. Him?
"Come here. I thought you were blind, not deaf." Ravenpaw felt his heart grow cold, thinking of Frostpaw.
Ravenpaw bounded inside once more. In front of him was Berryheart, a light gray tom. His eyes were soft. Ravenpaw knew the elder had lost his leg, at least what the apprentices' told them. Berryheart leaned closer, his musty scent brushing on Ravenpaw's.
"What Sunstar did was not right." Berryheart meowed. "You do not belong here, despite Lightspark. You would rightfully belong to SlopeClan too, I know."
Bumbletail woke from her sleep. "What are you gossiping about, Berryheart?"
Berryheart faced his denmate. "Oh you go back to sleep." He snapped.
Ravenpaw flinched. He itched to leave the den already. Berryheart turned back to face him.
"I know what it's like to be disabled." Berryheart mewed. "Especially at a young age. I want you to not care about that. You will strive, yes?"
Ravenpaw nodded.
"Very good. Now leave."
Ravenpaw paced around in the medicine den. Mistleheart had not spoken to him at all! He needed her help, his paws itched with frustration. Homesick tugged at his heart. He missed his Clanmates, he missed Hollowpaw! Ravenpaw felt weird thinking that, why did he miss her so much?
Foxpaw crawled through the den. Panting. "I caught this for you. It tastes a bit of eagle."
She pushed a thrush towards him. Ravenpaw ate the thrush quickly. When he finished, he looked up to face where at least his sister was. His smelling had gone dull and by now he would be useless in battle. The scent of herbs wafted around them and he felt uncomfortable.
