Ravenflight slept in the warriors' den, cold air drifted in. He pushed closer to the cats around him, trying to get warmer. Once he had fallen asleep, he had woken up in the Frost Forests. The place was cold as usual. Blue-white snow covered the grounds, and trees coated in blue snowflakes. The bark of the trees ran with ice that covered it whole, giving it a blue shine. Ravenflight fluffed his fur out, coldness sweeping into his fur.
He padded further in the Frost Forests. White puffs of air fumed out of his nose as he breathed the frosty air. Ravenflight felt his paws grow numb as he continued in the forest. In the distance, he saw a cat crouching in a log. The cat's fur was fluffed out with cold.
Ravenflight approached the cat warily. The cat let out a short-tempered hiss, their yellow tabby fur bristling. Only now, Ravenflight realized the kittypet scent that brushed the log he was in, and a collar wrapped around the cat's throat.
This cat was a kittypet! Ravenflight stared at the cat.
"What are you doing here?" Ravenflight asked the kittypet.
The cat slid outside the log. "I'm keeping warm! I don't smell your scent on this log here." he snapped.
"No, no, I understand," Ravenflight muttered, I don't want your dumb log! He saw a silvery shape outlining the kittypet's fur. "Are you dead?"
"Well yes." The kittypet replied, eyes wide. "Isn't every cat dead here?"
Ravenflight nodded. Was the Frost Forests where every cat that did not believe in StarClan went? Of course dumb furball! He replied to himself.
He was jerked away by the kittypet's snarl. "Get away now!"
Ravenflight ducked down a fallen tree. He padded away. He felt as if the cold froze his pelt, wearily, Ravenflight crept into a small hole in a tree, curling to sleep. Only to find that he had woken back to the Clans. Ravenflight yawned, stretching his back.
"Wake up, Ravenflight! Pinefrost is calling you." Sharptail snorted.
Ravenflight replied with a twitch of his whisker. He padded outside the den, a fresh wave of coldness swept past him, he squinted as wind brushed his eyes. Ravenflight trotted down to the camp.
"Ravenflight. Mind coming with me on this moor patrol?" Pinefrost asked. Rainleaf, Claweye, Beetlewing and his apprentice, Nightpaw.
Ravenflight shrugged. Hunger gnawed his stomach, but the patrol was already leaving. He blinked as his father, Quillflight, trotted up to them.
"I'd like to come too. This moor reminds me of the moor back in SlopeClan," he mewed.
Pinefrost blinked, then nodded. The six cats went off. Ravenflight felt the peaty soil beneath him, wet and mushy. He glanced uneasily at Pinefrost who kept his head high.
"Isn't it weird the soil here is muddy?" Rainleaf pointed out.
Ravenflight flicked his ear in agreement. "The mud is muddier from BreezeClan and CloudClan territory." Pinefrost mewed smoothly.
Beetlewing's hackles rose. "We must warn the Clan!"
"I don't see a reason in warning," snorted Claweye. "We're fine."
Ravenflight pushed forward. "I drowned in that mud when I was in CloudClan!"
Quillflight narrowed his eyes. "CloudClan?"
"Long story. . ."
Pinefrost flicked his tail for silence. "We'll continue our border patrol and then tell Featherstar." He snapped.
Ravenflight followed Pinefrost stubbornly deeper into the moor. Heathers dipped below the mud, tilted, it's leaves covered in dirt. Ravenflight felt his paws grow wet, he stopped to give it a quick lick. Nightpaw raced ahead. Ravenflight staggered forward, feeling his heart skip as Beetlewing's petrified yowl splitted the air.
"Nightpaw! Watch out!"
Ravenflight ran forward. Nightpaw fell face first into the river after tripping on the mud. The apprentice yowled in surprise as he fell into the churning water. Ravenflight leaped forward to the shore, desperately searching for him. Nightpaw's head bobbed against the surface of the water.
The apprentice choked out water as he floated above, paws churning as he tried to keep balance.
"Calm down Nightpaw! You'll float under a Twoleg bridge where monsters run past. After that the waters will get calmer!" Rainleaf yowled.
Nightpaw replied with persistence. He tried to get a grip of the shore, but failed and his claws gripped the muddy soil. Ravenflight leaned forward, trying to get his scruff. But the apprentice was thrashing too much.
"Stand still!" Ravenflight snapped.
Nightpaw hissed in anger, choking on the water. Ravenflight got hold of his scruff and pulled him out. The apprentice's fur was drenched, and he was shivering badly. Beetlewing raced towards him, giving him strong licks like a mother grooming a kit.
"Quillflight, Beetlewing, and Ravenflight, take Nightpaw back to camp!" Pinefrost meowed. "Hurry!"
Beetlewing grasped Nightpaw's scruff. Nightpaw sneezed miserably, his eyes tired. Quillflight padded alongside Ravenflight, eyes worried.
"Why are you so worried?" Ravenflight asked.
"Why wouldn't I be? Cats can die here!" Quillflight meowed.
Ravenflight nodded. The three of them padded back to camp. Beetlewing didn't reply to the cat's questions when they got near the medicine den. Ravenflight pushed inside,
he was too exhausted to explain what happened. So instead, Quillflight did. Soon Ravenflight padded outside the den, his muzzle ached from when he dragged Nightpaw out, but he didn't mind. He wanted to be curled beside Hollowstep, sleeping peacefully.
He stepped inside the nursery. Hollowstep was fast asleep. Like he wanted, Ravenflight padded beside her. Curling around her brown shape and closing his eyes to sleep.
Ravenflight dreamt of running alongside Hollowstep, three tiny shapes running with them too. Those were his kits! But he noticed he could not see their faces, and their fur colors were blank. I don't know how they look, he reminded himself stiffly.
Suddenly he woke up, the moon was rising as the sun left. Ravenflight stood up stiffly. He padded out the nursery, ready to go back to the warriors' den. He reached the den and curled to sleep on his soft bedding. The cats around him snored lightly. I'm happy to be home.
