chapter sixteen: second in command

Thomas woke up the next morning, slid his clothes on and waited for breakfast. He looked over at Y/n's empty table, it saddened him to know that just a mere few days ago she sat there. Janson came in and told Thomas to come with him, he followed him quickly and he was brought to Ava Paige's office. "Hello Thomas." "Hi." he replied bleakly. "I thought I'd let you know that I'm sorry about what we had to do to Y/n, she betrayed us so we had to take action. I trust that you will never do the same. I don't trust alot of people Thomas. Asides from Y/n, the virus continues to worsen, the kill rate is up to 23% and I cannot have that. We have to take action soon Thomas." "Yeah, that's uhm that's horrible.." Ava looked at him and sighed, "You miss her don't you. I'm sorry but as of now there's nothing I can do. She is already in there." "I have a question, you know because I'm Subject A2 blah blah blah, what's Y/n?" Ava looked up at him and said, "Subject A0, The Saviour."

~*Y/n's Pov*~
I didn't sleep all night, I just lay outside. Newt stayed with me, as the protective person he's been revealed to be. I went down to eat some breakfast, we didn't have much, just weird bacon that Ben always burnt. I don't blame him, none of us can remember how to cook. I sat and munched away at the stale meat, I was starving anyway so I demolished it in less than two minutes. No one talked until Minho finally spoke up, "So Y/n what job are you going for?" I stared at him, "Job?" I looked at Newt confused. "Oh yeah, forgot to tell you about that part, all of us are assigned a job here. Alby, the leader. Me, Second in Command, Gally, Keeper of the Builders, Clint, Keeper of the Med-Jacks, Minho, Keeper of the Runners and Ben, who does all different jobs." "Am I allowed to pick anything?" I asked with a slight smile, "Yeah I guess so." "I wanna be a runner." Newt and Gally said in unison, "No." I looked at them with an annoyed face, "Why not? Because I'm a girl?" "No Love, the maze is just too dangerous, I don't want you getting hurt." "Why not, Gally?" "Because you're a girl." I glared at him, "Excuse me?" I stood up and so did he, Newt stood up and grabbed my arm, "C'mon, ignore him. We can find you a job." And with that he pulled me away.

"Newt, you don't understand I wanna be a runner!" Newt stopped and put his arms on my shoulders and looked me in the eyes, "Listen Y/n, I care about you more than anyone else in this place and I've only known you a day-" That made me smile, "And the maze is just a bad place, believe me. Maybe you could share Second in Command with me? We could both be Second in Command." I thought, "Does a Second in Command get to be a runner sometimes?" Newt sighed and rolled his eyes, "Sometimes." "Perfect! Then I'm in!"

We walked back to the group and Newt said, "She's sharing Second in Command with me. So she can have a mixture of all jobs." Gally gave Newt a sly look while Alby said, "Sounds good to me, I hope you don't mind but Ben has decided he wants to be a runner." "Eh it's fine," Newt said calmly, " just as long as he doesn't injure himself in the making. Y/n you're coming with me, I'm gonna show you the maps." "Okay!" I said as Newt ushered me towards the Maps Room. "So these are the Maps, they each make a different sector of the maze, the maze moves every night but it has a pattern over the course of two weeks. We think it might mean something but we aren't anywhere close, not yet. But I do believe we will get out of here eventually." I suddenly started to feel light headed as those same words rang in my head, "Wicked is good. Wicked is good. Wicked is good. Wicked is good. Wicked is goo-" Newt saw and said concernedly, "Y/n? Y/n, are you okay?!" That's the last thing I remember hearing before I felt my body hit the floor.
