chapter twenty four: friendship

~*One Year Later*~
Y/n had officially been in the maze for an entire year and a month, they had received twelve new greenies. Some including a boy called Frypan, Jeff and Winston, there was a bunch of other boys but Y/n found it hard to keep track. Y/n and Newt were best friends, they spent all of their time together just doing random things. Whether it's annoying Gally or singing at the top of their lungs off the watchtower. There were so many jobs around the Glade now, and it had definetly developed. The place was covered in wooden huts, it truly was beautiful. Every month, they had a bonfire to celebrate the new greenie. And hell yeah we're they fun, they gathered tonnes of sticks and burnt that off all night. Every bonfire, Gally made a very special drink, Y/n or Newt still didn't know what was in it but it wasn't that bad.

As per usual, Newt and Y/n were sitting by their very large log that just faced a maze wall. They liked to sit there once they got fed up with everyone. "Bloody hell Y/n, you gotta take it easy!" Y/n turned her head slowly to look at Newt, she smirked and gulped down the rest of the drink that Gally had given them which was meant for both of them. Newt just looked at her, with a shocked look on his face. Then he began to smirk, Y/n then realised what was about to happen. Suddenly Newt lunged towards her and started tickling her, "NEWT! NEWT- NO STOP!" she shouted whilst trying to stop laughing. About 20 seconds later he stopped, "That's what you get Sunshine." "Shut the hell up blondie." she said taking deep breaths.

They had nicknames for eachother, Newt called Y/n 'Sunshine' because she mentioned that she loves when the suns out, and Y/n calls Newt 'Blondie' obviously because of his beautiful dirty blonde hair. It was getting late and Newt decided he wanted to go to sleep, "Night, Blondie!" Y/n shouted across the Glade, Newt just raised a hand, trying to wave but.. not really waving. It was kind of just a shake of the hand. Y/n was an expert about the maze and the Glade at this point, she was Second in Command along with Newt. Y/n had still never been in the maze but she was always curious. One time she tried to sneak out during the day, she started walking towards the doors and Newt just picked her up and threw her over his shoulder, "I don't think so, Love." "Ugh Blondie, why've you always gotta ruin my fun." She said jokingly as she still hung upside down over Newt.

It was the next morning and Y/n and Newt were going to get breakfast. They got their food cooked by Frypan, he was a much better cook than Ben. So he became the Glades' Chef. They sat down at their normal table and began eating, when Minho came over to them. "Hey guys, uh Ben is kinda sick today.. so we need someone to replace him as a Runner." Y/n dropped her fork, this was the moment she had been waiting for. She knew Newt couldn't run because of his limp, so she was going to get to go in the maze. "Only if you want to.." Minho said with a sigh, "Hell yes!" Y/n said happily and Newt didn't look very happy, "Y/n, no. It's not safe out there, I don't want you getting hurt." "Newt, I'll be fine! Besides I have Minho to protect me." This made Minho feel a sense of pride which made him stand up taller and slightly puff his chest out a bit. "Calm yourself down Minho." Y/n said, noticing this. "Can I, Blondie? Please?" Y/n looked across the table at Newt who had an annoyed look on his face, "Fine, but I swear to god if she gets hurt Minho-" Y/n jumped up and hugged him, "Thank you Newt!" she gave him a quick smile before Minho pulled her over to the Maps Room.
