🎵 I'm holding on
Why is everything so heavy?
Holding on
So much more than I can carry.
I keep dragging around what's bringing me down
If I just let go I'll be set free
Holding on
Why is everything so heavy 🎵

Listening to music, Vernon picked up his backpack, ignoring his parents who were fighting again, he locked the house door and started on his walk to school. As he passed by the park, he walked up to a tree and etched a short vertical line next to what looked like 100 other lines he had etched on the tree. Then, he walked over to the back of the tree, there, etched on the tree was a small heart and two initials. S and V.

Vernon had a young sister by the name of Sophia. They would usually come to the park after school to play and climb trees. But 2 months ago, Sophia went missing. They couldn't find her. His parents had blamed Sophia's disappearance on each other and fought every day over any small matter. They had forgotten they had another child; they just woke up, fought, went to work, came home, fought and went to bed. Vernon hated it.

Vernon missed his sister so bad. He missed the way their family was when she was still around. Cooking together, singing along to songs and laughing. But those days were gone, and in its place, was just a bunch of dark clouds.

Noticing the time, Vernon shifted the heavy backpack he was carrying and trudged off to school.
