Four minutes after Rosie fell from the rooftop
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
She stared up at the rain.
Two, no... three broken ribs.
Rosie held a shallow breath to stabilize her ribs with her core as she sat up. On the plus side, I think this is the first quiet moment I've had to myself in weeks. All it took was a near death experience.
The continuous sound of rain against metal drew her attention. It felt like her vertebrae were grating against each other as she looked down at her landing spot. To her surprise, she realized that she was sitting on top of Titania. The rain was pelting against her armored chestplate and occasionally fell into her helmet and onto her closed eyes.
The moments surrounding the fall were a blur to Rosie. She vaguely remembered grappling with Titania and managing to rotate around the giant to use her as a landing pad just before impact. Glad the impact armor works from the outside too, Rosie mused. And dead or not, not even Titania will be moving anytime soon. It would have been a hassle to even confirm if Titania was breathing underneath her armor and helmet.
Rosie gingerly inspected her surroundings as she staggered to her feet. Flashing red lights and a murmuring crowd were to her north. It seemed like there was a commotion in the arrival area of the hotel. And judging by the sounds emanating from the hotel in front of her, there were still quite a few people not yet evacuated. Rosie didn't know how long she had been unconscious but she knew she could only have a few moments before YG soldiers made it to the ground floor. In fact, she was surprised they hadn't already radio dispatched soldiers from inside the lobby to search for them. Something must have happened inside.
Rosie held a hand to her head. Too much thinking on broken ribs... And an empty stomach. Just need to get moving. The other end of the alley seemed clear for now.
Rosie only managed one step towards the south end before she stopped. A large SUV skidded to a halt in front of her, blocking the exit. Her vision was already spinning and fading but Rosie prepared herself for one final desperate fight. You're all gonna have some broken ribs by the time I go down, Rosie thought defiantly. The driver's door opened and Rosie nearly collapsed at the sight of Lisa stepping out of the car.
Tears welled up in Lisa's eyes as she took in the sight of her friend, alive. She brushed them away quickly. "I knew it. I knew you'd be okay."
Rosie's shoulder slumped, she didn't truly even have the energy to collapse. She held her ribs, "I don't think okay is the right word." She looked past Lisa at the hulking SUV colored in a garish bright red. "Nice ride. Going somewhere?"
"To save our friends." Lisa smiled, tears springing to the surface again. When she wiped them away, her eyes stayed dry. "Wanna come?"
If Rosie had noticed the change in Lisa, a quiet confidence about her and the firm resolution in her eyes, she didn't comment on it. Instead she simply smiled in return, "I hope your plan is better than last time."
Lisa frowned as if in deep thought, "I'm pretty sure the rooftop was your idea."
Rosie waved away the comment and froze as she was clamped by an iron grip. She looked down at her ankle to see a gauntlet covered hand. She turned back in surprise to see a single red eye glowering at her.
Titania was still alive.
Rosie tried to wrench her leg free but Titania held on tightly. Lisa moved to help but Rosie held up a hand and scoffed, "You just fell like twenty stories onto solid concrete. Your armor is probably the only reason you didn't explode on impact. But you still want to fight me?"
