MIA

Oliver comes up to me and asks me what am I doing, causing me to snap out of my daze of staring at Madison.

"Huh? Oh, nothing. Just seeing Madison's moves. Remind me why is there no other person trying out for the captain of the cheer leading team." I ask him trying to calm myself.

"The girls are just too cowed by her." He replies.

"But she can't really do anything, can she?" I ask, hopefully.

"She hasn't done anything yet because no other girl has ever stood up to her or challenged her. I am convinced that you could change that." I don't know why he even thinks that. I know I put up a pretty strong front, but if I had to take Madison down, I'd probably shit my pants.

"I don't know." She responds, taking deep breaths, soothing myself.

"Yes, you can. Just let your body loose and move freely and fluidly, as you did in that dance competition. You will kick ass out there, Mia. I know you will. Do you know the slogan?" He says, trying to encourage me and build up my confidence.

I already have it memorised by now. "Yeah. Savannah told me. 'Together we stand, and together we fall. All for one and one for all! Our team has spirit, Our team has heart, together we're solid, so we'll never part. Fly high to the sky and cheer loud to the crowd.'" I respond.

"Woah! That was perfect!" He exclaims, hyping me up.

"Thanks. Lemme just put my hair into a bun. The ponytail is gonna be way too distracting." My hair is really long right now and I love it. I need to get all the ends trimmed to rid them of all the split ends.

"Also-"

"Would-"

We both start speaking simultaneously, but someone else calls out my name.

"Mia Thompson. Please come here." It's the coach's irritating voice.

"I'll meet you in the cafeteria, yeah?" I ask him.

"I think I'll stay here." What? Why? To make me a hell lot more nervous than I already am?

"Uh. Okay." I can barely vocalise my thoughts.

"Good luck!" He says, and I thank him.

I walk towards the coach, and he says, "Hello. My name is Mr Carson. Let's start with the basics, shall we? Show me how to do the clasp, high-V, T-motion and touchdown." I try not to let my nerves get the best of me. I move my body fluidly, and the moves just come to me. Like literally come to me, facilely.

"Very good. Now, do the toe-touch jump and hurdler, please." I am a little more nervous about this one. I move my body fluidly again, and it becomes a piece of cake for me. When I am done, I see and hear all the girls, except Madison, clapping.

"Great. Now let's just do one more - that is tumbling." Oh, God. This is the most arduous move of all. It's basically doing a handstand and a cartwheel together.

I take a deep breath and look at Oliver. Oliver is just rubbernecking at me in a not so subtle manner. I squirm under his gaze. He notices me and hastily shifts his eyes, and I can finally concentrate on the stunt. I put my hands on the ground and do the handstand and then the cartwheel. I slowly return to the standing position. I hear Oliver clapping loudly and the other girls as well. Madison was just staring at me.

"Awesome. You are the head cheerleader now. Emily Lydia and Grace Lydia, you are on the team. Madison Claire, you are out of the team." I smirked, looking at her.

"What the hell? You cannot kick me out. I am better than Mia any day." She shrieked.

"I just did. I don't want to see you lurking around the fields anymore. For basketball, I will ask Mr Davis to appoint Mia as the head cheerleader."

"Wh-" She was going to screech again, but I cut her off.

"Uh, Sir. I am already trying out for basketball as a sport. So, can I try it out first and if I don't get selected, you could talk to Mr Davis?"

"Sure, Ms Thompson. Although, if you do get selected, we have Ms Grace for the position as well. You are my first choice, obviously. So, no worries."

"Oh, okay. Thank you."

"Most welcome. We have practise every Monday and Friday.

"Okay."

"You were fantabulous out there. Let's go to the track field, shall we?"

"Yeah, let's go. Lemme just take Savannah's jersey shirt." Confidence is surging through my blood in every vein and artery. I feel so damn good after seeing that anger on Madison's face.

"Go ahead. I'll be right here." He responds.
