"Andy get up!", there was a pounding on his bedroom door accompanied by an annoyed sigh from his little sister, Maddie. Andy did not get up, he rolled over in bed and closed his eyes once more and that was just the first mistake made of the day. Five more minutes, he thought unfortunately for him that thought was interrupted by ice water being poured on his feet by none other than his dear sister. It was cold, very cold and he was very unhappy about it. "Maddie! What the actual-" he had started to say, but he was interrupted once again, "Mick will be here soon sleepy head" Maddie said looking quite annoyed probably because she was very annoyed, she had been ready for hours.
Andy suddenly felt a panic as he really remembered what they were doing today, their friend Mick, from school was taking them to a summer camp today. He wished he could get out of it, he would much rather stay home and Maddie felt the same about that. Unfortunately mommy dearest, their step mother, thought otherwise. She was a gold digger who dug for the gold they didn't have, she was with his dad for money and status, it didn't matter to her that he stayed up late struggling to pay the bills. He wasn't supposed to know about this, but his dad had told one night when Andy bumped into him getting a midnight snack. His dad was a lawyer and he made money but not enough, never enough for her, yet he wanted to make her happy so he did what ever she wanted. In this case what she wanted was to go to Bora-Bora for all three months of vacation, she didn't have to beg, his dad had said that they didn't have the money. Of course mommy dearest had a solution, the kids can stay here, let them be with there friends, they had one friend but she would never budge.
He cursed under his breath, "I know right. Now get ready, we don't wanna keep him waiting." she commented. He rolled his eyes at Maddie's comment and as he looked up at his sister resisting the urge to roll his eyes again. She was dressed in summer camp chic, which he was sure wasn't a thing, her dirty blond hair was tied into two tidy french braids, she had a pink shirt that said 'Hot Girl Summer' knotted up and ripped jean shorts on. Of course she is ready he thought of course, because it was Maddie, perfect Maddie, the favorite, his stepmother's favorite as if her opinion even mattered, but she was his dad's favorite. That was what mattered, his dad had a favorite and it was painfully obvious that Maddie was indeed his favorite kid and she always had been, since the day she was born. He loved his sister with all of his heart, but he hated their flip reputations. He was Andy, Anderson Glen Brown the trouble maker, the dyslexic kid, the kid with ADD, the kid that got into fights at school, the teachers worst nightmare, and his dad's biggest mistake.
She on the other hand was Maddie, Maddie Grace Brown, the cheerleader, the aspiring hair stylist, her dreams and goals were not ignored, they were celebrated and Maddie hated it. Her brother didn't know of course but she hated it with all of her being, she was just as messed up as him yet that was purely ignored. She was perfect and expected to act perfect, her dyslexia and ADD were ignored almost as much as her brother. "Maddie you look lovely as always, are you ready?" her stepmother asked, "Yes ma'am, just waiting on Andy" she replied with a perfect fake smile, "I didn't even need to ask did I? Love the shirt 'Hot Girl Summer'!" she gushed before adding "I plan on having one of those too," with a wink. Ma'am your literally 30, Maddie thought, go post something on Facebook or whatever 30 year old women that marry men decades older than them for money do. "Ready" Andy announced to the hall way, "finally" their stepmother said shortly as he walked out. Maddie bit her tong and gave Andy the look that said I know you haven't said anything but kindly shut up, she did that a lot, fortunately their dad walked in before Andy could open his mouth.
"Kids Mick is here, he seems eager to leave" their dad said, they exchanged looks that said wow, thanks dad. It felt as if he was trying to push them out, as if he hadn't apologized for this, it felt like he really didn't care. "Andy be good" he said fist bumping Andy then he turned to his daughter, "No boys, love you Maddie Grace" he said, she huffed "Well mom didn't follow that rule did she, why should I?" Maddie stated, she had made a point, a point that made Andy bite his tong in attempt to not laugh as their step mom clenched her jaw at the mention of their biological mother. Their dad sighed, their mom was a tense subject, the never knew her apparently she had ran away almost immediately after she gave birth to Andy, some time later she came back and boom, nine months and then their was baby Maddie on the front door step with no explanation.
