-Y/Ns pov-
"Enjoying the party, Y/N?"
I turn around, my smile fades.
James.
"Until you came along. How can I help you?"
The soldiers I danced with grin at James.
"So you're dancing with all these men but not with your brothers best friend?"
Don't you dare, James. Don't put on your-
There it is, his charming smile. Since our 'date' I can't pull my thoughts away from it. This smile gets into my head and messes with my thoughts. It makes me happy yet I just want to punch him.
He'd look good with my fist in his face...
Before I can answer him, James pulls me on the dance floor and draws me as close as possible, making me frown.
"What do you think are you doing, Y/N?"
His voice sounds harsh as if he was... disappointed? We're the only ones on the dance floor, not dancing.
"James, I'm enjoying myself. And you should do that too."
I free myself from his grip and turn away to leave the dance floor.Suddenly James grabs my wrist and pulls me back again, slamming our bodies together. We can hear the soldiers standing up, ready to kick James out of the bar.
"Watch what you're doing." I warn him. Not because of the soldiers but because I'm totally ready to kick my knee into his crotch.
But James eyes turn soft and his grip on my wrist loosens.
"I can't." He mumbles, looking into my eyes. What? He can't?
-James pov-
It took me too long to realise. When I read the letter that I'm being shipped to England in two days I didn't think about my best friend. I thought about Y/N. That I have to leave her.
I don't want to leave her.
"Of course you can, James." Y/N sounds like she is about to punch me but I just keep looking into her eyes.
"Listen to me, Y/N-"
"No!" Again she frees herself from my grip.
"I am *so* done always being told to listen to someone, James! Especially if it's something *you* have to say!"In the corner of my eye I can see the soldiers moving closer. They seem to be the only ones noticing what's going on.
"Please-"
"Don't you dare say my name again, James."
She leaves and calms down the soldiers.Should I... leave? Give up?
I go to the bar and order something to drink while watching Y/N talking and laughing with anyone except me.
Why did it have to be her? The only girl that doesn't want me... I don't want her either. God, I hate her. The way she smiles when she mocks me, I just hate it. There is not a single thing about her that I like.
"Are you okay, pal?" The bartender pours me another drink.
"Yeah. Just thinking about all the reasons why I hate her."
The bartender laughs at my answer and shakes his head.
"I see this look on a soldier's face a lot, pal. Go and tell her before it's too late."My gaze falls on the drink.
"It already is. We had a wonderful night a few weeks ago. That night I should've told her.""So is she-?"
"Oh no, we had a date. We both didn't know it, our friend set us up. But in the end she shared some cotton candy with me and we laughed about common memories. Turned out cotton candy is her favorite sweet..."
I pour the liquid down my throat and the bartender refills it.One of the soldiers comes up to me and playes his hand on my shoulder.
"Sergeant Barnes.""Tomorrow is our last day. Are you ready?"
My comrade shakes his head.
"Noone is."
He follows my gaze.
"That's Rogers sister, right? We always thought you two would become a thing but she seems to dislike you even more than we thought. Lost a bet because of that."Concerned I turn to look at him.
"What bet?""Oh, right. Nothing."
As I raise my eyebrow he leaves.
