In the midst of chaos and mini explosions, he turned his head to look upon me with widened eyes as shock overtook him. Luckily for him, he still somehow managed to not lose his control over the other cavalry members.
"Huh?!"
Fear took over his face and I gulped in nervousness before continuing my speech.
"Look, Shinso, I, uh, I am not mad at you for this, in fact, I think it is quite the genius pla——"
"Wh—— it not w——" whispered Shinso under his breath while facing the front as if he was too afraid to face me.
What was he muttering about? I strained my ears to attempt to decipher what he was talking about, but the loud cheers emitting from the crowds and the mini explosions from the obstacle course just covered up his voice completely.
"What are you muttering about, Shinso? As I said, I'm not mad at you for this, so just face me and get it over with!"
After a few seconds of hesitation, he shifted his weight and looked back down upon me with those frenzied lilac eyes of his.
"Ho—how, are you not under my control?"
Ah, so he wanted to know why his quirk didn't work on me even though I answered his mutterings.
My facial muscles stretched into the familiar position it usually stretches into whenever I see Shinso and Mizuno.
"Cause you are my friend!" I beamed up at him to the best of my ability. Friendship is magic, right?
His eyes widened and he immediately shifted his position, so he was facing the opposite way instead of facing me. If I squinted hard enough, I think I could make out his neck being a tint redder than his usual skin tone, but alas, the shining sun might be making Shinso feel hot and hence become redder after having knelt under it for the whole duration of the race or maybe it could be just my imagination.
The sounds of the crowd cheering and students getting hit by the landmines placed on the ground filled the air.
At that moment, I realised one thing, Shinso and I never confirmed whether we view each other as friends or not, perhaps it's only me who considers him a friend. I mean we never asked each other to be friends, we really just stuck together along with Mizuno after the legendary Picnic day, so after a while of hanging out together, I just assumed we all viewed each other as friends.
Seeing as he didn't seem to be planning on answering my statement, I continued my speech in an attempt to correct my mistake.
"Just, uh, just ignore the friend part for now. The real reason why you're unable to control me is because I'm currently using a finger to stab another finger of mine until it hurts and bleeds, you did mention shock and pain makes a person immune to your quirk right?"
No answer huh. I looked up at Shinso and realised he was just facing forward with his eyes screwed shut as if concentrating on something. Was he even listening to me? Oh well, considering the amount of people he was controlling and the amount of competition he has, I decided to just talk to him later and allow him to concentrate on whatever he was trying to accomplish.
"I'll leave you alone for now and maybe we'll talk about whatever this is later. But one thing I want you to remember is that I'm willing to support you until the end. Though I won't cross the finishing line with you as I doubt I'll be of use in the next round when you have to face those people with amazing powers and techniques, I'll carry you and help you win with the best of my abilities."
His eyes opened, then he sent me a subtle nod of approval before returning to focus on keeping his control over the other cavalry members.
So just a nod huh. I didn't know what happened between us, but all I wanted at that moment was for Shinso to win as this sports festival served a very important purpose for him, that is for him to win, gain attention and potentially transfer into the hero course and become a future hero.
