We each get a cup of hot chocolate and East gets some honey roasted nuts. We all watch the sunset and take pictures. We get a really good one of all of us, the sunset in the background.
Fenix gets a notification on their phone. "Hey guys, the state game is tonight and it's at the school, do you want to go?" Fenix asks looking at us. "Yeah that sounds like fun" East says looking at Fenix. "Wait, isn't Jack playing tonight?" North asks. "Okay we have to go now." I say. "Ok, but let's bring everyone we could use a fun thing instead of just meetings about homophobic boys," East says. "Yeah you're right," Fenix says. "Already texted everyone while you guys were talking" North says, taking a sip of her hot chocolate. "Little sneak" I say, shoving her playfully. "Alright well we need to get going now if we're going to make it" North says getting up and walking to the car instead of replying to my shove. I'm a little disappointed, but I hide it by taking another sip from my hot chocolate.
"Alright, but can someone else drive?" I ask getting up from the table as I finish my drink. "Sure I'll do it. I miss being the driver" Fenix says as we walk back to the car. We all get into the car and ride to the football game. When we get to the school it's 7:00 pm and pitch black. The squad is already here and waiting for us near the bleachers. We catch up to them and then take our seats. We're in the first row and I can see everything. The pep squad did a nice job with the field paint, our mascot the wolf looks really detailed in the middle of the field. I see Jack near the bench talking to the coach. "Hey there's Jack" I say pointing to him. East, North, and Fenix look to where I'm pointing. We all wave. He looks at us and looks upset.
I guess he heard about what we did to the guys. A quarter of the bleachers we're filled when we got here, but now people are showing up. Every seat is full. Since Tanner is out Jack is the new quarterback. Since Jason and Rex aren't here two news guys are replacing them too. The first half is a little dicey; we had two fumbles, three missed catches, and a horrible field goal. Now it's halftime. We all stand when Serina Pen sings the national anthem. When she's done we sit and the marching band comes out. They play "These Boots are Made for Walkin' " by Nancy Sinatra. They play and move around to form many shapes, they actually form a boot at one point. We all clap and dance along a little. East takes pictures too. Then they end and walk off the field, half time is over.
The guys exit the locker room and come on the field. I don't know what the couch said in there, but the second half was amazing. It's down to a tie now. Jack says "HIKE" but there's no one open even close to the end field. Jack decides to go for it himself. He takes off. He's running and running and.... he gets tackled!! Wait he held the ball forward it counts! TOUCHDOWN!!! WE WON!!! We all jump up from our seats and yell. I see East hug Fenix this time. Then the ref gives the giant trophy to Jack as the team carries him around chanting his name.
Once they leave and most of everyone leaves I walk over to him. "And you thought that you weren't gonna win" I say with a smile. He picks me up in a hug. "Thank you!" He says. "Hey man, let me down," I say tapped his shoulder with some force. "Ow" He says holding his shoulder. "Lesbians don't like being hugged by guys, remember that" I say pointing my finger at him. He holds his hand out. I take it and we shake. "Thank you," He says. "You're welcome" I say back. East, North, and Fenix run over. "Hey nice job super star" North says, going for a hug. Jack extends a hand "Not making that mistake again" Jack says.
"She's bisexual and is consenting, there's a huge difference" I say. North and Jack hug. "Wow didn't see that coming" East says looking at her sister like she's nuts. "What he won!" Is all North says in response. "Well do I get a hug?" I ask North. "Maybe later" She replies. I shrug it off and turn my attention back to Jack. "Well I'm very proud" Fenix says to Jack with a smile. "Hey I'm really sorry I punched you. If it will make you feel better you can punch me" Jack says extending his face. "I'm not the punching type, but Iris is," Fenix says, giving me a go ahead look and taking a step back. "This may hurt," I say stepping forward. "Oh come on it can't be that bad" Jack says closing his eyes and preparing himself. "You'll regret that," East says. Then I land the punch square on his eye.
"Holy hell woman!" Jack says looking at me and holding his eye. "Don't underestimate women" Is all I say looking at him and smiling. "Hey Jack let's go celebrate! Pizza at Papa John's tonight" one of his teammates says. "Hey gotta go, thanks again and Iris next year you should try out." Jack says and then runs after his buddy. "Can you believe that? ME and Football." I say looking at them and laughing. 'Well.." Fenix starts. "I mean..." East says. "Yes" North says.
"Come on guys be for real" I say. "We are Iris" North says. "Yeah you could totally do this" East says. "Iris I've known you for five years, there is no one tougher, braver, or stupider I've ever met." Fenix says looking at me. "Mk, but that's next year. Let's just find the car and leave." I say. We did find the car and left and I had to drive again. What I didn't know so clearly then was that familiar emotions were rising, but not for the same person.
