As I slept I dreamt the strangest things. I was running from big dogs and marble statues. We went faster and faster until I realized I was running with them instead of from them. The only face I recognized was Jacob's. He was holding my hand. I looked behind us and saw what we were running from. It was pack of beasts in the darkness. All I could see clearly where their yellow eyes. We were running in sand towards something on a throne. It also looked like an animal but it was golden and beautiful.

My dream started to fade as the drugs wore off and I woke up. I kept my eyes closed and listened. I didn't think anyone else was in the room so I opened my eyes. The first thing I saw was red covering my chest and for a second I was terrified. I touched the red with the left, uninjured hand and realized it was cloth. Someone had put me in a cashmere sweater and I smiled. I looked out the window and it was daytime, maybe early morning.

I sat up slowly and looked in a full-length mirror leaning on the wall in front of the bed. My hair was in a ponytail and I was wearing a sweater dress. My right arm was bandaged, my left leg was in a brace and I could see where my ribs were wrapped under the dress.

My leg and ribs still felt sore but my arm felt fine so I removed the bandage. There was still a thin, rough scar that I knew would fade soon. I stood up on the crutches next to the bed and wondered how long I'd been asleep. It couldn't have been more than a day and a half because I still had a scar on my arm.

I could hear people talking down stairs and I saw what looked like the roof of my car against the wall on the other side of the bed. As I moved around the bed towards it I tripped on a chair and one of the crutches fell, loudly. All the noise down stairs stopped. I was in a house full of vampires so of course they heard it. In seconds someone knocked on the door.

"Come in" I was so embarrassed when my voice cracked; I didn't want them to know how scared I really was. When Jacob walked in I was more than relieved. I was so happy that I forgot to be scared and embarrassed. I started to move towards him before I remembered that I didn't actually know him and that my leg was still hurt. I tripped and he caught me. I was embarrassed all over again.

"Good morning sleepy head" he said picking up the crutch that I dropped. "You've been asleep for almost two days. Some of us were beginning to worry."

"Sorry about that. I guess I was really tired" We moved to the door and I could feel the heat of his hand on my back as he helped me along.

I stopped at the top of the stairs trying to gain courage. "How many of... them, are down there?" I whispered, praying that only Jacob could hear me.

"Um, only six, three of them are out hunting."
"Only six? Out hunting?" I mumbled under my breath, nodding to myself.

He laughed at the shock on my face, "Don't worry I'll protect you. Plus the ones you have to worry about aren't here." He chuckled.

"Well that's good" I said, not at all reassured.

Walking down the stairs I kept my eyes glued to my feet, praying that I didn't trip. I could feel all six pairs of eyes staring at me. I reached the bottom, looked up and tried to smile. They were so unnaturally still.

"Hello" I said and waved with my newly un-bandaged right hand.

"Your arm looks all healed," Jacob said.

"Mostly. There is still a scar but it should be gone by tonight." I adjusted the crutches under my arms. One of the vampires jumped up and was standing in front of me in less than a second. I wanted to scream but, despite her pale complexion and light eyes, her smile was so welcoming.

"We are so rude keeping you standing here. Please have a seat on the couch." She led me to the couch on one side with Jacob on the other. I sat down and tried not to look as nervous as I felt. Five of them were clearly vampires but there was one little girl who was sitting on another girls lap that confused me. Unlike the others she had a very slight tan, color in her cheeks and her eyes were dark brown.
