The next morning I dropped Leah home. While I was at the reservation I stopped at Jake's house. Billy opened the door with a spatula on his lap and a smile on his face.
"Morning Mikenna. How are you?"
"Good Morning Mr. Black. I'm good just a little tired."
"Please it's Billy. Mr. Black makes me sound old. " He wheeled backwards into the house and I followed. "Ya, you look a little tired. I can tell you two had fun last night. So you looking for Jake?" He stopped in the kitchen and flipped bacon sizzling in a pan.
"Yes I need to ask him a favor. I bought a new car yesterday and I need someone to help drive it back."
"Oh a new car huh?"
"Ya, I like Bella's but I need my own."
Billy mumbled something to himself poking the bacon then looked back at me frowning. "That means you'll be leaving soon huh? Going to Africa to get more answers?"
"Actually I'm not planning on leaving anytime soon. I like it here; not having to hide being different. I'll really miss everyone when I do leave."
"Sure sure. We are in no rush to say goodbye to you Mikenna. I know Jake likes having you around. Speaking of Jake, he is out back in his garage. Would you like some bacon before you go?"
I declined the bacon and walked out the back door. I heard Jake working before I saw him. It was the sound of metal hitting metal then something heavy falling over. As I walked in I saw Jake kick an old motorcycle.
"Hey chief," I said cautiously, "You ok?"
Jacob spun around surprised that he wasn't alone.
"Mikenna! Hey! Hi. How long have you been there?"
"Long enough to see you assaulting your bike."
"You shouldn't sneak up on people like that." He turned back to the bike setting it upright on its kickstand.
"I didn't think I could sneak up on you with all your super senses but I'm sorry if I scared you." I sat on a stool next to an old Ford pick up on cinder blocks.
He came over to lean against the truck next to me. "I wasn't scared just surprised." He stared at me his eyebrows scrunched in worry. "Are you ok?"
"I'm fine. Why?" I tried not to stare into his eyes.
He reached up and placed his hand on my cheek gently brushing the skin under my eyes with his thumb. "You look tired."
I concentrated on not pressing my face into his hot palm. "No, I'm fine. Do I really look that bad?" I turned to look into the side mirror of the truck and also to put some distance between me and Jake.
He was right, the whites of my eyes were tinted red and the dark circles under my eyes were more prominent.
"Ok I look pretty bad but I'm fi..." As if on command a yawn hit me twisting my face in unattractive angles. I quickly slapped my hand over my mouth and Jacob tried and failed not to laugh. I slowly removed my hand as he smirked at me a trace of worry still in his eyes.
"I don't get much sleep here. It's really cold at night and there isn't much sunshine during the day, but I'm ok I promise."
"OK," he nodded slowly and for a full minute we slipped into silence just looking at each other until I finally looked down at my hands.
