Of course it's raining. Where else could I have expected vampires to live; Miami Beach? No. They have to live in the rainiest town in the United States, where everything was wet and green; where the roads were winding and slippery. It was only September 1st and I could already feel fall in the air.
I knew that day would be different. From the time I woke up I knew that I was close to finding the answers to all my questions. "What am I?" "Where did I come from?" "What can I do?" and "Are there others like me out there?" Those were my thoughts as I carefully took each turn in the road, trying to see around the downpour of rain drops. A part of me wanted to return to my hotel and wait for better weather; my smarter part. But a more annoying nagging part of me wanted to keep going, to keep driving through the rain in the middle of nowhere.
As I came around a bend in the road a deer leapt out in front of my car and at the same time another car came around the corner from the other direction and everything began moving in slow motion. Not just because I was scared but also because my senses had gone into hyper drive. I could see every raindrop hit my windshield, I could hear the scream of the woman driving the other car through her closed windows and I could almost smell the fear radiating off of the deer. I could also see that the woman in the other car did not see me but she swerved straight for me. I turned the steering wheel right and into the trees as the deer ran into the woods, safe from its predator while the woman straightened up and drove away. My car stopped violently smashing into a tree. I felt my ribs crack from the seat belt, and my nose hit the steering wheel as shards of glass hit my face and upper arms.
The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the smell. I expected to smell burning rubber and gas but it was something I had never experienced before. It reminded me of campfires, Christmas trees and my dog, Athena, after her bath. It smelled like home mixed with the smell of my own blood. As I opened my eyes I saw a big animal backing into the trees. I figured it was the creature that had been chasing the deer. I could feel the blood dripping from my nose and face and knew that it would attract more animals. As I pressed against the steering wheel trying to free myself from the wreckage the pain from my ribs and one of my legs hit me, hard, and I black out again.
The first thing I noticed when I regained consciousness was that I had been moved. Without opening my eyes I noticed I was lying on a bed in a room. There were at least two other people in the room because I could feel their hands on my arms that were lying by my sides. They were gently picking debris out of my skin. The hands on my left were very warm, almost hot. The hands on my right side were the exact opposite. They were cold and hard like a rock that had been put in the freezer.
I tried not to move so that they wouldn't know I was awake but suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my right arm and I let out a gasp. Crap. Very slowly I opened my eyes and looked to my left. The man standing there looked like a 6'8" giant. He could pass for a man in his mid-twenties but something in his eyes told me that he was a lot younger. He wasn't wearing a shirt and his skin was a deep tan. His hair was shiny black and fell to his shoulders. My mouth fell open when I noticed his torso. He had the body of a Greek God. I looked back up to his eyes and he was frowning at me. I wondered if he was real, if I really was awake.
"Hello," this voice was from my right side and when I saw whom it was coming from I knew I must be dreaming... or dead. He was beautiful in a strange way. He was pale white like the sheets under me and his hair was white blond. He was about 6'1" wearing a navy blue button up shirt and he looked like he was in his early 30's but in his kind golden eyes I saw someone much older.
"Oh no, I'm dead aren't I? Crap, I knew I shouldn't be out driving today. Stupid rain. Stupid deer. Stupid tree." The giant started to laugh and the angel smiled. "Why are you laughing at me?"
"You're not dead." said my angel.
"Then I'm dreaming? My imagination is really, really good." I smiled and poked my giant in his stomach and it hurt my finger. "Ouch, wait that hurt. I'm so confused." I put my arm over my head.
"My name is Dr. Carlisle Cullen and this is Jacob Black. Jacob found you after you were in an accident and we brought you here for medical treatment."
I peeked out from behind my hand and looked up at him. "Did you say you're Dr. Cullen?" I got excited and tried to sit up but the pain in my stomach and arm made me dizzy. Jacob and Dr. Cullen both put a hand on my shoulders to keep me down. The difference in the temperature of their hands was so extreme, even through their gloves. They both realized that I noticed how hot and cold their skin was and quickly pulled their hands away, Too quickly. My jaw dropped and they both stared at each other looking worried.
Dr. Cullen moved to a table and picked up a vial and syringe. "Here, I'm going to give you a mild sedative so that I can set your ribs and take care of your leg."
"No, I already know about you two. You don't need to hide. I was actually looking for you when I crashed. I know what you are."
Jacob froze, trying not to make any sudden moves and the doctor kept his smile relaxed, too relaxed. "What are you talking about?" he asked still filling the syringe.
"You, Dr. Cullen, are a vampire and Jacob is a shape shifter." I looked at Jacob and he turned red under his dark tan skin. "A wolf right?"
Slowly he nodded his head and Dr. Cullen stopped smiling. He laid down the syringe and put both hands flat in the side of the bed. "Why were you looking for us and who told you where to find us?"
As I lay on the bed I realized that I could no longer feel the toes of my left leg. "I was just in Italy a few months ago and I was told by Aro that if I came to Forks, Washington I could find answers. He said that there are 'creatures' here almost as unique as I am." I looked down at my toes and saw that they had turned purple. "I'll be happy to tell you why I've been searching for you but it's kind of a long story so can it wait for later. My leg really, really hurts and I can't feel my toes."
"OK, it looks like you will need stitches in your arm and I might need to do surgery to set the bone in your leg. You will need crutches for a few months." Dr. Cullen picked up the already full syringe.
"Actually I heal very fast. You can just bandage my arm and it'll be better in a day or two. And my leg might not need surgery. You two are strong so you can just bend it back in place while I sleep. As long as the bone is lined up correctly everything will be as good as new in a month or so." I started shivering. Both Jacob and Dr. Cullen looked concerned. "Don't worry, I get cold easy. It's one of the things I'll explain later." I smiled weakly.
Carlisle lifted my arm to give me the injection. "Wait. Before you put me to sleep I think I should introduce myself. My name is Mikena Adole, but you can call me Mika.
"Nice to meet you Mika" Dr. Cullen said as he stuck the needle into my arm. The last things I was aware of as I fell asleep were Dr. Cullen standing above me and Jacob's hot hand squeezing my cold one.

Ok, I can't decide who I like better as Mikenna. Yaya Dacosta whom is pictured on this chapter or Tika Sumpter, pictured on chapter 10. Let me know who you can picture more in the role or give me your own suggestions.
