Life became something close to normal. Construction at the apartment complex was done and appliances were being installed. My father worked with Jacob to open a new auto repair shop. Dad was mad when he found out that Scott’s Auto Repair Shop, the only mechanic in town, over charged for subpar work.
Instead of opening a new franchise of Adolé Auto they worked to open a shop employed by people on the Rez, mostly the pack, and owned by Jacob.
My parents spent half their time in Forks and the other half visiting their various businesses. Gemini and Athena were living with Jake and me.
The first week of wedding planning was not fun. Alice, Rosalie and my mother wanted to have a huge extravagant wedding until I shut them down. I reminded them that I didn't know many people well enough to invite them to a shindig littered with sparkly, fury, supernatural beings they only saw in movies. They pouted for a few days before getting on board with what I wanted; Simple and light.
The date was set for September 1st, exactly one year after Jake and I first met. Alice said it would be overcast but warm and dry, perfect.
Rosalie and Alice were determined to design and make my dress. I allowed it as long as it was simple and light. They excitedly told me I wasn't allowed to see it until the big day. I agreed if Bella and Leah could supervise.
“How do you feel about heels?” was Rose’s final question.
“My fiancé is almost 7 feet tall and I have the agility of a cat.”
“Stilettos it is.” she left in a flash, too excited to feign normalcy.
Leah and I were sitting on a blanket in the Cullens’ yard finalizing the seating chart for dinner trying to separate the eaters from the non-eaters. “Basically you're inviting four humans?”
I glanced at the list again, “No, six humans.
She listed the ones she knew, “My mother, Sam's wife, Billy, and your dad. Who are the other two?”
“They are friends from New York that would kill me if they weren't invited to my wedding. They're already mad the wedding isn't in the city.”
“It wouldn't be too difficult to have everything moved to New York. We know people with the perfect venue”
“No.” I answered Alice’s mental inquiry out loud. I shook my head telling Leah not to ask.
“How much do these friends know?”
“Everything that I knew before I left. They know there are supernatural things out there; I just have to make sure they don't ask the too many details, which shouldn't be difficult. We are setting up one of the apartments for them to use for a few of nights instead of a hotel. On your floor actually?
“I'm getting neighbors?” Leah had moved into one of the apartments as soon as it was ready and was working as the complex manager.
“Yes, but you'll either hardly notice or you'll love it. Hollis and Aiden are my oldest and best friends and Aiden is definitely worth looking at.”
She rolled her eyes and turned back to the seating chart.
“What? He's beautiful and actually built like a wolf, tall and athletic with dark hair. You'd never believe they're twins. Hollis is just over 5 feet and strawberry blonde but they both have huge blue eyes. I actually can't wait for you to meet them.”
“When do they get here?” Leah pulled out her new smartphone to add the dates to her calendar. She welcomed the normality that came with having a job and apartment.
“Three days before the wedding and they leave 3 days after;
“I'll make sure everything is ready for them. It might be a good idea to turn one of the apartment buildings into a hotel for people who want to stay in something nicer than the Motel 6. Not that we get many visitors other than truckers around here.” I chuckled and shook my head.
“What?”
“You love this don’t you?”
She smiled and slipped her phone back into her pocket, “If you mean not just being the ‘Wolf Girl’; Having a phone, a job, clothes, an apartment and a car, then yes I love it. I love my people and where I come from and I know it seems weird wanting to be normal but I like being the ‘Wolf Girl’ now because that's not all I am anymore.”
“I completely understand, and that also makes you the perfect person to hang out with Hollis and Aiden if I get busy with wedding stuff, especially Aiden since Hollis is my maid of honor.” I winked at her “Don't dazzle him too much, he's very single.”
“I'll try to turn down my dazzle for the week. We wouldn't want the guests falling in love with me or anything.”
I thought it sounded like a great idea but I knew love was a touchy subject for Leah since her first love got married the year before to her cousin.
“I miss them and you're welcome to tell them as much about the pack as you feel comfortable with. There is little to no risk of you all threatening to change or kill them for knowing, right?”
“Very little chance. We'll keep them away from Sam.”
The Two o’clock alarm went off on my watch. “Oops I have to go.” I gathered my notebook and pens. I’m meeting Esme and my mom for a cake tasting and design meeting at the condo. I need to make sure they keep it less than two feet.”
“How do you expect to feed a pack of wolves with a cake that’s less than two feet tall?”
“I’ll figure it out but this needs to be kept simple. I swear my mother is thinking of renewing her vows just so she can throw a huge bash.” Turned to go to my car and Alice was suddenly in front of me.
“If she does I volunteer my services.”
“Me too”
“Not me” Rosalie and Bella called from their work room upstairs.
“I’ll be sure to let her know.” I walked past Alice. “Later ladies.” I waved over my shoulder. The compromise between my short cake and feeding a dozen large men was cupcakes; one 2 foot cake and three dozen cupcakes in various flavors all topped with silver, gold and blue icing.
I envied Jacob. His hardest jobs were showing up for fittings and hanging out with my dad who was the most laid back person ever. One night as we lay in bed he told me about lunch that day at the steak restaurant.
“H asked why we’re rushing this wedding. He asked me if you’re pregnant.”
I sat up in bed and laughed, hard. Jake stared up at the ceiling mortified by the memory. I wiped tears from my eyes, “What did you tell him?”
“The truth,” He pulled me back to his chest.
“But how did you tell him?”
“Well, I said it was impossible and he just sat there waiting for me to say more. I had to actually tell your father that I’m a virgin.” I shook trying not to laugh out loud, “Go ahead let it out.” I burst laughing so hard I almost fell out of bed.
“Ok I’m done now,” I took a deep breath trying to settle. “It’s just that I told them both that weeks ago.”
“Wait so he was just messing with me?”
I put my chin on his chest and looked up at him, “Yep.”
He looked shocked, “I can’t believe he did that. I thought he liked me.”
“It’s like kids in grade school. He teases you because he likes you. Welcome to the family.”
