The next morning I woke up alone. Again. I found a scrap of paper and my car keys on Jacob's pillow.
Meet me for lunch @ Noon.
Your turn to find me
Love You to ∞
-Chief
I stayed in bed till 10:30 then took my time getting ready. It was cloudy but not raining so I straightened my hair. It had grown 4 inches since I was bitten and now hung to my waist when straight. I put on nice clothes instead of my tear away pants and as I stood in front on the mirror I decided that if I was forced to change it would be into a vampire. These jeans looked too good on me to be shredded.
As I climbed into the truck I saw my mother inside the motel's main office. She was always up to something and I wouldn't be surprised if she was trying to get me kicked out so that I would have to move. I almost went in to see what she was doing but I decided against it. I didn't want to be late.
I knew exactly where Jake would be and found him at the top of the cliff at La Push Beach. A quilt was spread on the ground with five large pillows and a wicker basket.
Jake stood and smiled as I walked towards him.
"Not a very good hiding place Chief. This was the first and only place I thought of looking."
He wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head, "Mik if I really wanted to hide you would never be able to find me. I know these forests better than almost anyone."
I inhaled deeply taking in the same rich earthy smell as when I first woke up in my wrecked car.
"I could find that scent anywhere." As soon as I looked up I could tell something was wrong.
I passed my fingers across the crease between his eyes, "You look nervous."
"What? No. I look hungry, it took you so long to get here and I'm starving."
It was only 11:58 but he obviously wanted to change the subject. We sat down on the pillows that reminded me of the meeting room in Kijiji Paka I couldn't believe the smell coming out of the basket and my stomach grumbled loudly.
"What's for lunch?"
"Your favorites," He pulled out a platter of fried chicken, a dish of hot baked macaroni and cheese, Corn on the cob, collard greens, salad and apple pie for dessert.
I sat on my hands waiting for him to get everything set up.
"I convinced your mother to help me out. After everything, you need a
big home cooked meal. Dig in."
I took a bite of the mac and cheeses straight out of the dish. It was hot and perfect.
We ate for the next few minutes to the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks and our own mumbling.
"Oh my goodness, your mother is amazing. Can you cook like this?"
"Yes." I swallowed a mouthful of chicken. "She taught me well."
"Why don't you cook? This is a great way to get on the packs' goods side."
The members of Jake's small pack were ok with me but many in Sam's larger pack still saw me as an outsider.
"It would be difficult to fit all of those people in my small kitchen-less motel room."
"This is why you need to move."
"Why we need to move."
We ate the warm pie out of the tin. When I had my fill I sat back watching Jake. He was also wearing real clothes; dark jeans, shoes and a grey sweater that fit him so well.
"What?" He asked, checking his sweater for any fallen food.
"This is all very nice but I'm waiting for you to tell me the real reason for this picnic."
"You don't think I would do this just because you deserve it?"
"You might but Mom doesn't cook like this often especially when she's on vacation."
"Fine," He took a deep breath and stood pulling me up with him.
"There is another reason I wanted this to be special." He held my hands between us lightly tracing the lines of my palms. I felt a slight tremble in his hands and his heart was beating as fast as a normal persons. His nervousness was making me nervous.
"What's going on Jake?" I put my hand over his heart.
"I love you more than is humanly possible and for the rest of my life I will only ever love you more."
"To infinity and beyond."
"Right, I told you he was smart." He cracked an uneasy smile then took another deep breath and got down on one knee.
I knew what was coming next but I froze, eyes wide, mouth hanging open.
"Mikenna Leigh Adolé, Will you marry me?"
I still didn't move. Jake shook my hand called my name and I snappedout of it. I launched myself at him and be fell onto the pillows with my arms wrapped around his neck and my lips pressed against his. He rolled on his side so that we were lying next to each other.
"You didn't answer me."
"Of course I'll marry you." All tension melted from his face and shoulders, "Why would you even be nervous about that?"
"When Edward first asked Bella to marry him she said she was too young."
"I'm not a teenager. If anyone might be worried about marrying too young it would be you."
"I'm not worried about it. We both know I'm an old soul"
"Then we're getting married" I moved to kiss him but he moved away and sat up.
"Don't you want to see the ring?"
"There's a ring," I sat across from him, "I don't need one, just you."
"But you deserve one." He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a black velvet box.
He opened it and handed it to me. "I hope its ok."
I was speechless again as I took the most beautiful, perfect ring I'd ever seen.
The band was as infinity sign repeated in white gold and small diamonds. Sitting low in the center of one of the loops was a larger diamond.
"Do you like it?" he asked cautiously, "All the stone and the gold are from my mother's and your grandmother's engagement rings."
"My...our parents knew about this?"
This is how I got your mother to cook. My father actually gave me my mother's ring the first week you arrived. Said I would find a good home for it. Then after you were bitten, while you were asleep I told your parents that I was going to marry you. They brought their rings and helped with the design. You still haven't said if you like it."
"I love it. It is beyond perfect."
He slipped the ring onto my finger then wiped away a tear from my cheek. I held his palm against my face.
"We're getting married."
He leaned in and kissed me. "We are getting married." He whispered against my lips.
