12: Home Safe Home Again

We spent the next two weeks in Kijiji Paka (loosely translates to 'Cat Village' in Swahili) learning the culture and a lot of the language. Noemi and Michelle took turns as our guides and translators when N'Mai was busy being Chieftess. I watched as Jacob gave rides to the children after they got used to him. I also sat in the tree as he went hunting with the pride. He was used to hunting in the forest and having trees and rocks to hide behind. It took him a few tries to learn how to stalk prey through the tall savanna grass.

N'Mai came to us one morning as we helped draw water from the well. She was solemn as she brought us to the meeting hall. "My children, it is time for you to leave us. There is soon to be trouble for you pack Jacob. I have known this for a few days but have put off telling you. I apologize for keeping this from you and beg your forgiveness."

"What is wrong with the pack?" Jacob demanded. I held his hand to keep him calm but I also wanted answers.

N'Mai nodded, understanding our frustration. "Nothing is wrong just yet. You still have time to go to your parents' home before making your way to the reservation,"

"But what is happening?" I asked. Even in the desert heat I could feel Jacob's blood began to boil.

"The cursed ones have found your pack and the next full moon is in eight nights."

"How did the werewolves find us?"

N'Mai did not answer Jacob's question but I knew the answer by the way she looked at me.

"They were looking for me." It hit me like a brick; people I cared for were in danger because they knew me.

Jake looked confused, "What do you have to do with this?"

"They are the enemy of the pride. If they can't attack here why not find cats who are alone and don't have a pride to back them up."

"You didn't even know what you were, how could they?"

"The hate is in their blood. They track and kill shifters on instinct. If they were looking for Mikenna, finding an unsuspecting pack of shifters would be happy accident."

"How..." So many questions flooded my head, "How do you know the pack is the next target? Another gift of yours?"

"No, not my gift, your mother's."

A part of me was not surprised to hear that. It explained a lot of the 'family vacations' we took almost monthly. I remembered watching the full moon from a cabin in the Canadian wilderness more times than from my own home. I smirked and shook my head, "Of course," and then I remembered what my mother always said, " 'When you can smell death getting close you know it's time to go.' The werewolves smell like death, don't they?"

"Yes, they do." She answered.

Jake and I looked at each other as I said to N'Mai, "They were in Port Angeles, not too far from Forks and the reservation, last full moon. Why didn't she warn us then?"

"I do not know," N'Mai put a gentle hand on my shoulder, "You can ask her when you see her. I'm sure she was..."

"Trying to protect me?" I finished for her, "Yes I've heard that a lot."

Noemi and Michelle drove Jacob and I to a hotel in town that evening and by the next afternoon we were on a plane home.
