"Jake, you need to calm down." I put my hands on his back feeling the tense muscles through his shirt.
"I would be calmer as a wolf."
"No. We cannot go out there ready for a fight. They're not coming here to hurt us."
"How do you know that" he walked away from my massaging hands, "because they're bringing a smaller group and leaving the little witch twins at home? It could be a trap Mik."
"It won't be a trap. They have no reason to attack us."
"They didn't last time either. Even after they realized Nessie wasn't one of those demon children, they still wanted to kill us all."
"Well, the difference now is me. They know me. I lived with them. If they wanted me dead, they could have done it then."
"Carlisle lived with them for over a decade, and they'd kill him in a heartbeat. Plus, you're different than you were then. What if they say you're a danger now?"
"They've always known I was different Jake."
"Not this different and we don't have time to bring N'Mai over here as proof. It wouldn't matter. They want any reason to destroy the Cullens, even you.
"I know but they're not dumb enough to come here for a fight without the full guard. If they're not coming with the full guard the least you could do is be human. You can change in a second and the packs will be close. Ness can stay home with my parents."
Jacob shook his head ready to argue more. I rushed to put a hand on his chest and the other over his mouth.
"This is happening tomorrow Chief whether we like it or not. Tomorrow we will walk out on the field, human and ready to avoid a fight. If you go in ready to fight you will just be giving them an excuse and they really don't need more.
"If it comes to a fight we will win overall and there will be no more Volturi but we will have losses too and I don't want to lose even one member of my family, not to them." My eyes pleaded with him to agree.
He removed my hand from his mouth and kissed my palm. "Ok, you win. I'll be human till the first sign of trouble, but I can't promise more than that."
"Ok, I'll take that, but you'll also wear real clothes so maybe you'll think twice about shifting." I smiled, kissed his collarbone, and walked into the bathroom to brush my teeth. When I came back out Jake was already in bed looking worried again.
He stretched his right arm out so I could cuddle in next to him like I was going home.
"No point worrying tonight. They won't be here till tomorrow."
"I know," I could feel him curling a lock of my hair around his finger. "I just wish there was something I could do now. Last time we prepared for weeks and camped out the night before but now there's nothing to do."
I tilted his face down to look at me. "Yes. You can keep me warm and go to sleep, that way we can both be rested and alert tomorrow. The vampires don't sleep so let them worry about tonight, they'll get us if we're needed."
He continued to stare daggers at the ceiling. I shivered and Jake instinctively wrapped both arms around me, encasing me in a comfortable heat.
"Wait," he pulled back an inch. "You don't get cold."
"I don't feel cold, but I still like being warm." I snuggled closer to him, and he kissed the top of my head. "Go to sleep Chief. Tomorrow will get here soon enough."
