We arrived at my parents' house in Virginia the next night with Jake driving the whole way. It wasn't as scary as I expected. We did make it there in record time, ignoring every speed limit. There was no need to worry about the police when Jake could see and hear everything for miles around.
Our arrival was a surprise and as my mother stood in the open front door, I kicked myself for not calling ahead. I walked up to her slowly with Jake trailing cautiously behind. She was very intimidating with her hands on her hips, glaring at me.
"Oh look Jameson, it appears that we do have a daughter," she called to my father in the house. My German Sheppard, Athena ran out to greet me. At least she was happy to see me. "After all this time I completely forgot. And she brought a guest but didn't think of calling her parents for months."
"It's only been a week Momma," I wrapped my arms around her, but she wouldn't budge from her stance. My father walked up behind her. "Hi Daddy." I went to hug him.
There was such a dramatic difference in the two. My mother was not much taller than five feet while my father was around 6'4" and I stood in the middle at 5'7".
"We talked to her last week Lucy. You exaggerate too much." He put his arm around her, and she relaxed slightly.
"Who's your guest Miky? He's huge."
"Daddy, be nice." Jake was still standing in the middle of the walkway petting Athena who had jumped on his chest. "This is my good friend Jacob Black. He is from the Quileute Reservation right outside of Forks, Washington. Jake these are my parents Jameson and Lucile Adolé."
Jake walked forward and shook their hands with Athena at his side "Sir, Ma'am, nice to meet you." He was towering over my parents, but I'd never seen him look so young.
"We have been driving from Forks for the last few days. I thought I should stop here before my next trip." I explained.
"That was thoughtful of you," my mom said, trying to stay mad.
"Ignore her," my father said to Jake. "We're glad to have you home Miky. Let's go inside before we all freeze to death.
I walked up the porch steps laughing to myself; Jacob could never freeze to death, and neither could I, wrapped in his arms.
"Mickey? I like it." Jake whispered to me as we walked into the house.
"I can hear you," my mother said a few feet in front of us, confusing Jake.
"I get my super senses from her. That made it almost impossible to sneak out when I was younger. Almost."
"What was the question? You'll have to speak louder for us normal people." said my father.
"Daddy, he just said he likes the nickname, Miky."
"Oh that," my father began as we sat on the couch. "Just make sure it's spelled right. No 'C' or 'E' she's not a mouse." He let out his big deep chuckle.
"I never really liked that nickname," my mom chimed in. She elbowed him in the side playfully.
"That's strange," My dad said referring to Athena and my cat Gemini who had just jumped onto Jake's lap, "They never like strangers." Athena was getting comfortable at his feet.
"Relax Chief." I rubbed Jake's arm. "That is a very good sign."
Mom turned to us suddenly, all smiles gone. "What brings you home Mika? I'm not complaining, it's just unexpected. You were happy in Washington just last week, now you're here."
I was stunned by her intensity and tried to answer her questions without saying too much about the last week. "We did leave suddenly but everything is fine." I looked over at Jake as he squeezed my hand. "Mom, now I think we need to go to Africa for more answers." Her face lit up, but I kept going. "Supposedly there could be a group of female shifters out there. Why are you looking at me like that?"
